X2 cnc with Fignoggle plans? Casting parts?

Hi guys. I just got my X2 mill and want to tackle a cnc conversion. I ran across plans from Fignoggle. Has anyone had any experience with using them or any thoughts on the design. I like it because it still leaves all the manual controls intact just incase I would like to use them for simple jobs. I also do metal casting with aluminum and would like to know what, someone with more experience than me, thinks about casting all the parts and doing finishing work with the lathe and mill. I know casting would cut my cost big time and time also since all the parts would be really close to dimensions. I am working with a tight budget and would like to have a nice operating machine and, if I can go this route, would take the money I save in the mounting hardware and invest it into some decent electronics for it. What are your thoughts on this route? Thank you all in advance.

Well, I started my project. I have most of the patterns done for casting. I will probably make a few copies of each(never know when you'll need and extra piece or mess up on final machining). I have to recondition my sand for pouring tomorrow. I will be posting pics of the pour too. I knew those old aluminum water pumps would come in handy for something LOL.

No experience with casting but I think it is a great idea!
I would do it if I had the means.

Finally got all the parts cast...except one. I will have to do a lost foam pour on it. It was too detailed for the green sand way. Have one setback now. I broke the plastic gear in my mill finishing the parts....I just knew it was going to happen sooner or latter(just ended up being more sooner than I hoped LOL). So, I just ordered he belt drive kit for it from Benchtopprecision.com(Scott is a member on here also). I have officially surpassed the cost of the machine with tools, clamps...now the kit. This is my first milling machine so I had to start from pretty much scratch. I have to say...I love it though...worth every penny. Funny thing was is I was about 5 minutes from ordering my ball screws when the gear broke. That god i broke when it did or I wouldn't have ha enough cash to buy the belt kit. I will get the pics of my parts up latter on today...I was pretty impressed on how well they came out.

    I'm looking forward to it!
I bought Scott's pulley, didn't have a lathe at the time. It worked well for me.

Looking forward to seeing the results. I'm about 1/2 done with the parts for my conversion from their plans. I have the plates all done for the x and y, just need to turn the handle/pulley for the y, then start on all the parts for the z.

Not sure what could be wrong. I've never uploaded any pictures here.

well...up and running again. Got the belt conversion from Benchtopprecision.com. Its awesome. Shipping was a little slow but its about $50 cheaper than anyone else. So...I have made more progress, but ,for the life of me have no idea why I can't upload pictures anymore. So I guess thats the end of this thread. Sorry guys I tried. It is much cheaper this route and cuts machining down tons. Its not hard or expensive to get into casting...info is everywhere. If you have any questions about that just shoot me a message and I will help you as much as I can.

I'm not sure why you can't attach pics and I know it's a pain in the butt, but maybe you could upload them to a photo sharing site and insert them that way?

I finished up my furnace and burner last year. Are you using oil bonded or green sand for your casting?

Yeah...guess I will have to go the photobucket route. I used a home made green sand(play sand with ground kitty litter) Works great. Just like any sand there is a lil texture to it. Just tried the lost foam. Dipped in a sheet rock slurry....came out very smooth. Plus no green sand needed. I should have used that from jump street.

This project sounds really interesting, if you can't put the pics up here, please put them on an external site as others have suggested. But have you been trying to upload large pics, as the attachment size is around 500KB from memory?

    cheers,
    Ian
