Not very scientific but it worked to get started. i am waiting on several gauges i ordered yesterday to make a tramming tool like hoss's and the other dual gauge tram tools out there. and will likely make somthing for when it is in lathe position as well. gotta think about that one but have some ideas.

Yea, I dropped mine down onto 123 blocks and locked it in.. Wasn't too far off.. but enough for me to notice. Come to think of it.. I have a hardened steel rod that's slightly smaller than .5".. I can't use it with collets, but, I could mount that up in a chuck and drop the Z down so that it touches 2 123 blocks (one close to the chuck, one toward the end)..

What treadmill motor did you get? I got mine today.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

The brushes are parallel to the commutator but it seems to want to run smoother CW than CCW. I think it may be a timing thing. I may need to change the timing to make it a little more efficient in the CCW direction. I took the motor apart, looks like I can do it. The brushes on my motor look like they are uni-directional. Maybe they just wore in in a CW direction. I will do some more testing.

I am a FSE in the semiconductor robotics industry so I have a ton of screws, linear rails, servo motor laying around. My friend is sending me a bunch of Yaskawa servo drivers, motors and controllers they have laying around at work. I am going to see if I can just go the servo route for the spindle. I see some other people doing it on youtube, looks pretty cool.
    Matt,

that looks the same as mine with the exception of the horsepower rating. looks like yours is 2.4hp and 1.75hp continuous duty? mine is 2.8hp and 2.25hp continuous duty. but the frame is the same, both permanent magnet motors. try flipping the brushes to see if that smooths it out in CCW rotation. and take note on whether it is a tapered shaft or the pulley is reverse threaded on. Hoss's was reverse threaded and mine was tapered. with your lathe setup you can cut a taper in the timing pulley though.. very easy!

very much looking forward to seeing the ballscrew results!

Thanks Sk8Ter! yeah for some reason that tool is very well hidden on their website. i found mine in the catalog they sent me with an previous order and used the part number to find it online.. if i had to go back and find it through the website i doubt i could do it lol.

post up when you get yours in and up and running!

    Connor9220,

there ya go, I know little about machining, i am "winging it" so to speak... but each week i find new tools or gauges or something posted online that seems to help make better sense of it. machining is skilled trade and experience plays a large role, there are so many ways to do something that its not hard to learn it the wrong way or at least a much harder way then need be. ideally, I would like to be able to morph as quickly and accurately as possible between mill and lathe... and not have to manually change tools............ATC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gotta have it! hahaha

A buddy of mine handed me a 24 volt motor out of an Electric Mobility chair today. It made me think of this thread. I wonder what cool things I can do with it. LOL.

I did test it on my truck battery and it seems to run fine.

That is awesome, what feed rate are you using to get such a mirror finish and what insert? Also is that steel or aluminum?

    Nice work!

This is 1" aluminum stock. I used the Mach turn wizard to create a 1" diameter sphere on the end. For the finish I cheated a bit... I did use a piece of 1200 grit sand paper and a bit of polishing from a Dremel while it was still spinning on the mill. The whole polishing process took a couple of minutes. I will make another cut so you can see the unpolished finish to compare.

hahahaha... i was wondering, i was thinking to myself... man i must be doing something terribly wrong, my finishes look good but not that good. glad to know i am probably in the vicinity of the norm!

I am cutting out the motor mount for the new treadmill motor, once that is done i think its time for the ballscrews... i had one "minor" crash when my z axis stalled while retracting and then it tried to take a cut as if it were at the part Z sero location. luckily i decided to finish the motor bore in the block of aluminum with a boring bar and left myself .050", i was able to hit E-Stop before it went to far or losts its X and Y location.

I'll post some pictures up when its done, but I think the ballscrews will help the stalling on the Z axis.. that and i have brough my rapids down to 40-ipm, it was running well at 50, but not gonna risk it.. may even drop it to 30-ipm for safe measure. the rapids done't speed anything up too much anyways, the cutting is still going to take a while. ( milling 1.5" thick aluminum block.

Lunch time then back to milling!

Looks like the 4" ones are actually gone from their site now. Knew I shouldn't have dragged my feet. Doh.

you may want to try giving them a call, they may not have it in stock but at least they can tell you over the phone when they will have more in! worth a call!

I may do that, but I think it's gone for good. The 3" is still listed, but shows out of stock. They were probably clearing them out, which is why they were such a good deal. I'm probably better off building some kind of converted 4th axis or something, this just seemed like a quick fix to do light lathe work. Even if they do pop back up, I'll doubt they'll be at the same price and I have a problem spending more when I know I could have had it cheaper. Not getting it isn't the end of the world, just irritated with myself. I kept eyeing it, but there are so many necessities I still need to get that I kept saying 1 more week. Not the first time this routine came back to bite me and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I know what you mean, you are probably right, that price must have been a clearance sale, I wonder if they had a big inrush of orders for it recently with the thread having the link in it. if so they may bring it back.. but like you said it won't likely be at that price. I am sure you could make one for about the same price at least... I hate you missed the sale. if i see anything else like it around the same price I will shoot you a PM on it!
