    Belt Break on 7x10

I had someone loan me a older 7x10 Mini lathe..

I ran it for a bit and the heard a pop. The belt broke, rather split into 3 tiny belts, and one of those broke and wrapped around the intermediate drive gear. Been a while since it was used, so, I thought maybe it dry rotted. Anyway, I have a replacement belt installed.. I'm noticing that the belt is rubbing up against the housing of the lathe.. and the intermediate gear doesn't have flanges on it to keep the belt from slipping off or to prevent this. I'm concerned that it's just going to rub against the housing till this happens again. Thoughts anyone?

    Thanks, Billy

The intermediate gear doesn't have flanges. The gear on the motor does. The belt should not rub anywhere. Adjustments can be made with the motor mounts to fix the rubbing issue. http://littlemachineshop.com/Info/Mi...UsersGuide.pdf

I read the manual.. It's not rubbing on the drive gear. It's rubbing on the housing at the intermediate gear. The instructions don't have any info on adjusting that. will adjusting the motor affect that as well ?

I have no idea what your machine looks like but if you can move the motor pulley axially it will move where the belt rides. Try that.

    Try this then:
    Mini Lathe Tuning

There is slop in the motor mount slots to let you adjust its' position--and therefore the belt-position.

Okay, that's exactly what I was needing. I do have another question. I noticed that the intermediate gear itself has play back and forth. I'm not sure if this is normal or not or if that will cause issues, or if it's by design. Again, this lathe is rather old from what I can tell, from the 80's.
