2012 Grizzly Catalog shows G1006 with CNC kit installed

I thought this was cool enough to deserve a thread. I know people have CNC'ed these, and kits have been offered at times, but I still think this is significant:

Today I got my 2012 Grizzly catalog. What I was surprised to see the G1006 with a CNC kit installed.

That's Page 555 if you just want to look at your paper copy.

I had studied to the point where I was about ready to start building parts to CNC mine, when I acquired a full sized Bridgeport instead.

That looks like it might be nice for drilling circuit boards
    It's actually a knee mill, isn't it?

It's a tiny horiz/vert mill, maybe a munchkin knee mill might describe it.

Im confused. What would you use this for over a conventional mill and how does it work?

    Thanks

This guy reviews a good mini horiz mill, Rudy Kouhoupt's video from the 90's entitled "Operating an Atlas Horizontal Milling Machine".
Gives you an idea of what it can do.
The couple I used at work were huge and we mostly gang cut big cast iron parts.
This one is cute but I wouldn't have much use for it.

    Yeah man....

Rudy is the MASTER!! That guy forgot more about machining that we will ever know. Those horizontals are sure handy for certain stuff. If you want to make gears or gang tool those rotary cutters it can really do some work. You can also do some cool stuff with vertical tooling in the horizontal spindle. Dunno about that tiny thing but the real knee mill sized machines are VERY powerful. You can usually get one for real cheap nowadays since everyone is going CNC. Peace

It'd be interesting if Griz had more info on which machines were compatible, and didn't concentrate so much on the flashcut controller stuff... And hey, I wouldn't want to CNC a round-column machine anyway...

What they oughta do... Sell machine-specific motor mounts/ball screws, and cut a deal with Keling/Gecko/Artsoft for drivers, motors and software...

"Here's your bolt-on stuff, here's the wiring harness, now plug the box into your computer, and the harness into the box. Make chips."

It's a Horizontal Machining Center, just waiting for a rotary table and some steppers !
Anyone who says "It only goes together one way" has no imagination.

A big time sink that catalog is.

I swear it came yesterday and I must have lost two hours off my home remodeling projects. I was impressed with their new SouthBend lathe, a bit above my budget but impressive none the less.

This brings up an interesting question, what does the SouthBend branded hardware give you above the run of the mill? Some of the SouthBend tools appear to be built on the same basic castings.

In any event I take this as a positive sign, that is Griz is getting serious about CNC. Now if they would only throw some innovation into the mix. I'd like to see them support EMC on an all new frame designed to be CNC from the start.

You know I saw that and I thought only if it was a bit bigger.

Very cute. I'm certain it will be taken seriously by the model making crowd. There are some good concepts in this mill that would be really nice to have in a slightly larger variant. The swappable spindle being one idea. In fact I'm beginning to wonder if they will have that spindle available as a separate item, repair part??? An R8 spindle ready to go could be put to use in many ways.

I will be going to Cabin Fever and will have to stop by the Grizzly store on the way home. Hopefully they will have one out on display. Like you I can't imagine buying the machine right now but damn it is cute. A good close look at that spindle assembly is needed too.
