If it's BT30 or ISO30, the fat part of the taper will be the same size as the taper on an R8.

I am looking at a machine for sale and the guy knows nothing about it. He sent me some pics and this picture of the tooling. I guess it is bt30 but I dunno. Can anyone here identify it? Peace
Pete

Looking at the picture it seems like this is larger than that no? IS it Cat tooling? I just dunno looking at the pics. It sure as hell looks rusty!!! Kinda like the rest of the maching probably...![]()
Sure looks like NMTB to me.

Yeah, the "spigot" on the end makes it NMTB. BT, CAT and ISO don't have the spigot. The large diameter will tell you whether it's 30 (1.25"), or 40 (1.75").

From that diagram and the picture it looks like NTMB40... ? Does anyone know if that sucks or is good and how available the toolholders are?/ Peace
Pete
CAT 40, ISO 40 and NMTB 40 are all quite available (ISA and CAT are VERY common on modern VMCs), and reasonably interchangeable as well. You can use CAT40 and ISO 40 in an NMTB spindle - may require a longer drawbar. But the tapers are the same. The other difference is in the locating lugs (The two cutouts in the sides of the flange which may require a little finagling to interchange.

NMTB uses a typical screw in drawbar that threads into the shank but the taper
is the same size as other tapers and would let you use them with pullstuds and the
appropriate drawbar.
NMTB's aren't near as common or available as the BT's anymore, but there are some sources.
