    Flycutter for Proxxon MF70

    Hi,

Does anyone know where i could find a fly cutter to suit the MF70?

i'm still using the standard collet set on a stock motor. Most of the fly cutters i'm seeing use 3/8 or 10MM shank which is way to big for the MF70. Hope to get some good leads from the more experienced users!

    Thanks,
    Dash

Fly cutters are not normally used on the smaller mills like the X1 and the MF70. You can use some small ones on the X2 but it is still a flaky process. What is the maximum shank size you can use? and do you have a R8 spindle?

Also if I am not mistaking the MF70's lowest RPM is 5000, is that correct? if so you do not want a fly cutter spinning at that speed.

    Hi

Dash: Fly cutters are very easy to build - if you have acces to metal lathe. Without lathe... sadly, i dont know anybody that sells so small flycutters (market niche?).

Jermie: I have Proxxon's Mill/drill system BFW 40/E, it's bigger than MF70 but smaller than X1 - and most of the milling operations is done with self built fly cutter. Mostly because it's so cheap and easy to resharpen. On the other hand cut diameter of my "big" fly cutter is 30mm As for MF70 - 10-12mm in aluminum should be possible.

    thanks for the replies gents.

Yep the minimum speed is 5K rpm on the stock setup. i'm not sure what the current spindle is, the largest collet size is 3.2mm which is basically dremel tool size. there is a mod i can get to add ER11 compatibility by changing the spindle bearing and then adding a planetary gear system to reduce the speed/add torque. However i think the biggest shaft size i can use is 8MM with that setup, which is still a little shy of 10MM or 3/8" (~9.5mm). Though, that might pave a better foundation for a custom flycutter.

unfortunately no lathe in my little workshop yet! looking at getting an c2 or c3 at some point in the future. but i'm not sure i'd trust using a 3.2mm shaft to support it though logically it sounds possible. To my understanding a flycutter uses comparatively less force in its operation than most would think. If 5K RPM is definately too high to risk then i suppose it wouldnt be worthwhile investigating this further.

I was hoping there might have already been some off the shelf solutions to this, as the MF70 has quite a following.

At 5000 RPM, it better be perfectly balanced, or your spindle motor will vibrate in to a pile of projectiles!

Dremel sells rotary files around 1/4" dia, and that must be held rally short!
