I found it just a bit ago. Google search works better than the forum search does sometimes..

Unfortunately it is closed as I just tried to do a reply to make it available to you. Does Hoss have the ability to open it again?

    Hoss,
Did you ever try the chrome? Do you think it would work on an X2? I'm thinking it would look neat to have a chrome cnc machine :-).

Yeah, I used Chrome on the spindle spanner wrench.
Needs a coating of clear like they say or it will dull up with use.

Do you think it would be possible to put on a linear encoder similar to a DRO and have Mach use that as the input? That way you would never have to worry about backlash.

I hate it when I waste your time with questions and then find that if I just read a couple of more messages my question would have been answered. Sorry, I try not to do that.

    All--

    First post, be gentle.

I own a Jet JMD-18 and a mini lathe 7x10 and have been pondering how to change the Jet to CNC for the last couple of years. I found the CNC-zone and it was very helpful to an enthusiastic but amateur machinist. After looking at new dovetail mills and the fact that my Jet does manual milling of aluminum quite well with only a 5" quill, I finally came to the the conclusion that I should just keep it maunal (a handy thing for quick projects) and buy a *new* drill-mill to be CNC'd. Woo-hoo!

I was looking at buying the X3 and SuperX3... but then I saw Hoss's thread on the small but mighy G0704 thread as was hooked. I ordered the Hoss's DVD on Sunday and it arrived yesterday (Wed) ... plus today I finally completed reading all 2836+ messages. (whew). To be frank, not sure of the behavior of some folks diss'n the Hoss-man's efforts, excellent documention and accomplishments in this incredible thread, but if you aren't happy here... just start your own thread. ;^)

    Hoss--

You have an amazing thread here and have done simply stunning things with the "little" mill that would have my big mill friends going "holy crap". Your bin of parts and tricks should have McGyver jotting down notes as to foil the villian in the episode. IMO, you've done an outstanding job helping us noobs and some experience folks as well and I would like to just say *THANK-YOU*. You make the Web a great place to explore.

Now that I have a direction, after hitting the surplus shops in the Portland area... I found a nice slide out 19" cabinet/tray and a trusty Dell 48V server power supply with 15Amp for $85. Yes, now I've started.

However, I've got question on the G0704 mill. After reading the quality issues with the motor and controller in the 'early days'... how are the new units? Better, Worse or Random? Just trying of figure out what i need to plan for in 2012.

    Thanks,
    Ron

Thanks Ron, guys like you are why I do this stuff and am happy to help.
A motor still pops every now and again but nothing like the troubles they had.
They at least should have a free replacement handy now for quick shipment if needed.
They still run out of stock on the mills but the backorder wait doesn't seem to be very long now.
Thing is they get some stock in at one of their 3 warehouses and if you can't wait, you could request
a mill from one that's not in your normal delivery area for a small extra shipping charge.
    Good luck, Hoss

    Hoss--

Thanks, good to hear the quality has improved and spare are on this side of the international date line. My goal is to be able to do simple things with the CNC... plus you provided me a great reason to buy another mill. You da man!

Keep up the great work... and continue providing the rest of us an example to aspire to be.

    Thanks,
    Ron

Hi, Hoss. I ran across this and thought you'd be interested. It's an optical comparator / edgefinder for mounting in a mill, made out of a cheap webcam. Apparently Mach software has a video window, and the camera can be used for edge or spot finding, as well as for measuring and reverse engineering a part. Don't believe I've ever seen it discussed here.
