    Hot stepper motor

I have a X3 mill that I converted to CNC, using a kit from Keling, and the Y motor has always run hot. I have been doing some 3d cutting lately with long runtimes, and have really noticed ALOT of heat in the Y motor. The X motor runs around 100degrees, up to 120 max, but the Y has reached as high as 210.. It even stays hotter when not in use than the X by a good margin.

What causes this? are there any fixes?

Also, I posted this in general, but no responses yet. I need a Lathe chuck for a 6" rotary table, What size chuck should I buy? Will any of them fit/work well?

I think 180 deg is max so it is a bit hot. I would lower the current setting a bit and see how it does. I have not heard of the coils going bad on a stepper yet so I would blame the driver for now.

If the stepper runs hot and drops more steps then I would think one of the driver transistors is smoked or leaking current.

You could flip the driver with the X and see if the heat follows the driver. If so it may have a problem or just the current setting is wrong. The switches don't always flip.

    What electronics are you using?

If it is a gecko, i would suspect that the current is not reducing while the stepper is idle. That would increase the heat load even when the axis isn't moving.

    Hi
what is the power supply, stepper driver you are using?
what is the current you set?
Max temp is 180F,210 is too high
