Some times there are good days and sometime bad.

    Today was great .
A good friend stops bye my house today and says he has a surprise for me.
We go in his car and he has thousands of end mills reamers vise ect in a wood case from the 1800s.
He went to a estate sale and a old mans life time of machinery tools were sold to him for a whopping 70$ he drove to my house surprised me and said give me the money back when you get it.
The box had a label on it that said drill bits. I opened it up there all carbide they range from the size of a pin to the size of my fist . 2 , 4 , 6 ,8 flute bits . I could gather all this in 20 years .
    Im happy!

I realize this is a tool gloat on my behalf but i figured this was the only place were it would be appreciated.
My wife said I was a ******* to spend this much money on Drill bits . She told me she can get them cheaper at our local Dollar store.
I tried to explain they were not drill bits they were end mills and not just any end mills carbide. My daughter looked at me and said now do I get a toy to daddy but I dont want drill bits ?
I told her sure kido .

My wife never understands why I allways am wasting money on projects. I told her I need to keep my brain fresh and keep learning . Im a man and I must work with my hands to feel happy and accomplish random projects to live a happy life.
All men do it. Its how we live. She says Im a boy stuck in a mans body . I told her all men are.

Later today I need to post a few pics I dont know for the life of me what a few of these tools are.
One is a soft oil dressing stick? Whats that for?
    Whats Coarse Indian Oil stone?
    Thanks Guys,
    Anthony

    Hi Anthony,
...will be waiting for those pictures!
I always like seeing what "deals" are had in other parts geographically, as they rarely come up in this less industrial part of the world...

Sounds like a new wife could be in order....may be harder to come by than the tools. My wife gets excited when I get something I want. She even wants me to buy a SawStop....table saw.
When I get old tools with some ones name on them I often wonder when I use them about the first owner and the level of craftsman he was.
Enjoy and treasure those old tools. Make something special for the daughter and wife...

My humble suggestion would be this-

    1) Take a piece of some nasty steel (say, about .25" thick), and spot drill two spots on it.

    2) Chuck a 3/8" dollar-store drillbit in a hand drill. (Maybe even try drilling something else with first, y'know, to give it a 'used' edge)

    3) Call your wife in, and ask her to drill through the plate.

    4) Change the bit out for a good one.

    5) Repeat step 3.

See if she notices the difference.

She won't know the difference between a drill bit and an end mill unless she sees the difference- sometimes analogies will be required. No need to go into the mechanics, but at the very least knowing the functional difference helps.

For my fianceé, it's easiest to draw a dance analogy, for something like investing in quality stuff I'd say "Sure, I can use the super cheapy crap, but doing that would be like doing Viennese in tennis shoes- you might get there, but it won't look pretty and you'll be likely to hurt yourself along the way." Viennese Waltz, by the way, involves a lot of fast footwork and lots of turning- shoes that slide along the floor help tremendously.

I find that the easiest way for me to justify things to SWBO is to make her see how much of a difference things make. She watched me cut stuff off with a hacksaw and angle grinder, and once I got the 4x6 bandsaw up and running she was floored by how much muttering, cursing, and mess it prevented... and usually stuff looked nicer at the end.

Gmfoster... a SawStop? Why would you want a saw that can't even cut a hot dog? ;-P

Seriously... I want one too, someday. Hopefully sometime *before* I hack a finger off... LOL.

(For those who aren't aware... it's a nicely made table saw, that won't cut your finger off. [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV8eEGUDYc4"]YouTube- SawStop[/nomedia] )

Arich, congrats on the stroke of good forune! May it continue! (Maybe someone will show up with some "scrap iron" that ends up being a full CNC machining center? )
