It's Home - New IH Clone

Yeah baby - my new IH clone from Machine Tools Warehouse is home - shipped on Feb 17 and actually arrived 2500 miles cross country on Feb 24. I went and picked it up from a local terminal yesterday with a rented flat deck trailer ($30 for the afternoon). Two hours of rigging and gentle coaxing and it is safely in my garage.

Now to go uncrate it and sees whats I gots.... feels like Christmas!!

    Pics later.

    Decrating

Here are a couple of pics of the decrating of this monster - now I need to figure out where I am going to put it (after I build a nice stand for it).

    1. Safe and sound in the garage after wrestling this crate off the trailer.

    2. Decrated - front piccie with included accessories (right) and 3 phase motor option (box left).

    3. Nothing too interesting on the backside.

    4. Obligatory front closeup.

    5. 2 HP 3 Phase Motor with Chinese only documentation - hopefully there isn't any important info in there! This was a $150 option (think I'll put the 2 HP single phase motor that came with the machine on my 3 in 1, LOL.)

    6. Quality toolbox, tools and accessories!

    RTFM! LOL!

To be honest, I wasn't expecting this unit to arrive so quickly so I scrambled to make room to at least get it in the garage (sorry kids). I was in the midst of building a welding/plasma table when it showed up in town so now I need to get a bunch of cr...errrr..stuff done that I was taking my sweet time to finish. Oh well.

Funny I have the same Nitro RC plane, Miller Welder, Princess Auto welder cart, Mastercraft workmate and about the same amount of stuff laying around my garage. Only difference is I am on the east coast where the snow is.

Congrats on the new mill, any plans on CNC'ing it.

Thanks Ian and Pete - my wife says I suck too!

Sfrankland - weird weather this year for sure - we only got about three weeks use out of the backyard rink this year and I've been slowly draining it for the past 2 weeks now - so much for the backyard Olympic gold medal game.

As for the mill, definitely going to CNC it once I figure out where I am going to put it (maybe the basement if I can camoflage it).

You'll be machining in no time if you keep yours in your garage - I've got to put mine all back together first!

Congrats on it - looks just like mine. What are you going to use to drive the 3 phase motor? Also - did you get the ISO 30 spindle or the R8?

Its too funny - when I first ordered mine way back in November the spec was a 1hp motor. Then my lathe motor died on my 3 in 1 so I thought - Ok upgrade the mill and take the 1hp and put back on the lathe, well that 2hp motor won't fit - not without a really big shoehorn!!! LOL!!

I did RTFM!!! Good for a laugh - especially the tapping feature which was pointed out to me by Pat - good thing were going 3 phase

What is the advantage of going 3 phase. On my bandsaw and table saw I took the motors out and had them done so they are single phase. They have a slightly reduced hp rating but not so much that it makes much difference.

Hey Mike - still deciding on which VFD - any issues with spinning yours up? Probably the D5815 from dealerselectric.com - seems to be a good price.

I went R8 on the spindle but Pat is trying to find out if its possible to retrofit ISO30 - may be cost prohibitive if its even possible.

sfrankland - your observations WRT your situation are absolutely correct. The real reason to go to a 3 phase induction motor is for the potential of having fine (infinite) speed control and increased RPM output.

However, just going 3 phase alone won't accomplish this, you also need a 3 phase power supply and a variable frequency drive or VFD. In the past you needed a dedicated phase converter if you didn't have dedicated 3 phase supply - there are now VFD's that incorporate phase conversion taking a single phase 60hz 120/220v supply and ouputting 3 phase 220v at a frequency of your choosing up to 120hz. It does this all within the current specs of your 3 phase motor.

    WTF - R8 or MT4?

Just perusing the Chinglish manual this AM and it specs the spindle as MT4 rather than R8 - gonna grab a flashlight and have a look up her skirt to see what's there, LOL!

If it is MT4 I'll be pretty pissed (maybe).

UPDATE - Its R8 - just pulled the R8 to JT33 adaptor that was already in the spindle!
