Default Kalvin's - Sieg X3 CncFusion Deluxe conversion

Another thread regarding a X3 conversion process.

I picked up my mill last week, ordering the CncFusion deluxe kit with the gas strut and the heli-cal couplings(2) this week.

I'm starting to plan the electronics. Any tips? suggestions? Voltage, Steppers, BoB, so many choices.

Has anyone tried the Gecko G540 on the X3. I'm curious if I'll be restricted due the lower current ratings. I see most on here have used G201 or G203?

    Cheers, Kalvin

    Hi Kalvin,

looks like there is a common trend, as I am also looking forward to convert mine.
I picked up my Grizzly at the PA showroom couple weeks ago and I am now
eagerly awaiting the CNCFusion deluxe kit to arrive. I am going to use some
Balluff proximity switches as reference switches. For the limit switches I find
something cheap. I already have the steppers, 269 oz/in for the X and Y and
a 640 oz/in for the Z axis. As it was suggested in the other X3 thread, I am
going to use a power supply at 70V DC and the Gecko 203V's.
Perhaps I post some pictures of the progress.

    Cheers

    Kay

Hi Kalvin. Welcome to the Zone!

So far, no one has found a useable N34 motor for the G540. In my SX3, I used a N34 1200 oz for the Z, 425s for x and y, 72V PS, (All Keling) and G203Vs. These give over 200 IPM rapids for X and Y and 115 IPM for full weight Z.

Hi Kay. Welcome to the Zone. Can you please give the specs of your motors including inductance?

Assuming that you intend to run the motors bipolar parallel, I'm worried that 70 volts may fry them.

    Hi Kay,

Looks like we can work through this together. I was planning on posting photos also.

"I am now eagerly awaiting the CNCFusion deluxe kit to arrive." Me too! My guess is our kits are being built up at the same time.

    Cheers

    Hi CR,

Thanks for the info. I didn't think the G540 would cut it.

Full weight Z? No counter balance or spring? I ordered the spring from CNCFusion after reading around.

Which power supply are you using from Keling?

After a fair bit of reading (mostly on this site), I've come up with the following.

    Breakout Board C11G $109.00
Drivers Gecko G203V $123.00 (On sale at the Gecko site)
    Steppers
    1X Nema 34 KL34H280-45-8A 640oz 1/2" shaft 6.3A 2.3 V $89.00
    (Will wire in bipolar series)

    2X Nema 23 KL23H86-20-8A 425oz 1/4" shaft 2.8A 4.17V $49.00
    (Will wire in bipolar parallel)

Haven't figured out what to use for my power supply yet.

In regards to the steppers, does anyone know if the -8a mean a single shaft? -8b is double? I'd prefer the single shaft. Those part numbers are from the Keling site.

I'd like to order everything from one location, but Gecko has a sale on their drivers right now so I'll probably be piecing things out from where ever I can get them.

    Cheers, Kalvin

Hi Kalvin. Yes, I don't use a spring--it limits the Z travel. Yes, the a means single shaft.

Best power for those motors would be 85 volts, but 72 Volts works well.

    Maybe I'm missing something here,

    Checking out the Keling site.
    http://www.kelinginc.net/SwitchingPowerSupply.html

Comparing the KL6515 and the KL7220 at the same price of $189.00.
Would you not expect the higher voltage/higher current unit to cost more?

I'm thinking the KL-7212 @$149.00 fit my needs. Any reason I should jump another $40.00 for the KL-7220?

    Thanks guys, Kalvin

Nope! The 7212 should be MORE than enough to power 3 425s and a 640.

    2.8 + 2.8 + 2.8 + 3.2 = 11.6 Total Amps. 11.6 x .67 = 7.8A required from PSU.

    Thanks again CR.

I like how you added that extra 425 in there. I thought about that after I posted.

I just sent an email off to KelingInc to see if they would match the Gecko 203 pricing. That way I can just make one order and get everything in one shot.

Ok, time to quit playing. My girlfriend is headed over here so I can go buy her supper. (After pricing all this out I might have to take her to McDonalds)

    Have a good night guy's

    Hi CR,

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

well I was mistaken as I had another look at my motors. It say's on the label Deepgrove, 3A, 3V, 0.9 degrees, 251 oz/in. Unfortunately, the inductance nor the max operating voltage is stated. The spec. sheet that came with it, only shows the basic connection of the two coils.

Do you have any more data on these, or do you know where to find the data ? Otherwise I may have to measure the inductance and fill in the blanks.

    EDIT:

Well, I just measured the inductance of this motor, it turn out to be
    6.0mH @ 1kHz
    5.1mH @ 5kHz
    4.5mH @ 10kHz

As per the Gecko manual the recommended operation voltage then turns out to be
    78V @ 1kHz
    72V @ 5kHz
    68V @ 10kHz

I am going to try them with 70V and see if I have any luck with it.

    Hi Kalvin,

yup, seems we are in the same boot. I am quite excited to get started on this, but this will take me quite a while until I can take this thing into operation once I have all the materials needed. I hope the ball screw mod is not to difficult to do, in terms of precise alignment and assembly. I have worked with ball screws before but much bigger and everything was pinned. Also, I feel more comfy in the electrical domain than with the mechanical stuff.

Anyway, it will be an interesting experience for me.

    Cheers

    Default inductance

    Hello,

can anyone tell me how to measure the inductance of a servo? I have some PM brushless servos and they dont have any indication of the inductance on the case.

    Thanks

    Hi,

well you need to get your hands on an LCR meter to do that. Checkout Ebay,
there are some cheap once for sale that may be good enough for the job.
Some let you select the measurement frequency, which may be helpful to get
    an accurate reading.

    Cheers

    HuckMilton,

Maybe paste a few good pictures of them. Someone might recognize them. I know they all look the same, but you never know.

Mine is on the way, been checking tracking numbers daily.

Actually I've got three packages inroute. Looks like most of my electronics will make it here first, in the next couple days.

    Just waiting. Waiting. Still waiting.

    Go figure,

My electronics and steppers showed up today. I was at work so, I did not get them. They left a slip in the door, so tomorrow will be the day for me.

    Ballscrews are still in transit.

KCT, did you get hit for any customs fees? It looks like there is no fees on my first two packages.

    Cheers,

You got it, UPS is an absolute No No when it comes to international shipping.

There are some great stories for you...

    http://www0.epinions.com/reviews/bsr...dard_to_Canada

USPS offers great reliable service at reasonable prices, no need to mess around with UPS and Co.

And, yes, my package was shipped USPS, not UPS.

    Cheers
