Default G0704 Mach 3 rpm question

    Hello Gents,

This is my 1st post so please be gentle.

I am converting my new G0704 using Hoss's phase 3 plans, and am having a hard time getting more then 90 ipm. I am using Windows XP, Stepnet Panel stepper drives in open loop (will go closed loop once I fix this problem), slo-syn kml-093 series stepper, and a 48vdc 100 amp supply. I can tune and control the stepper through the Stepnet tuning software and get 1000 rpm without any trouble from the stepper. When I try and drive the motor from Mach I can only get 400 rpms from the motor. I have tuning the motor in Mach and even played with the kernel speed and have had no luck getting anymore speed from the motor. If I can't make the steppers work I will try AC servo motors instead.

If anyone can shed some light on this issue that would be great. I would to solve this issue before putting the mill back together.

    Thanks

The driver is rated to 75 VDC. You are running it at only 48 VDC. Try a different supply with a higher voltage. You will need the higher voltage to get the higher revs.

Ah - 48V and 100 A for your supply? That's 4.8 kW. Are you sure?

    Cheers

Is the motor stalling, or is it just limited to 400 rpm?

The supply was a 48vac 60 amp supply that I installed a 100 amp bridge rectifier to convert to DC. Sorry I miss spoke it was used to run 8 stepper drivers simultaneously. The thing weighs about 50 lbs and is only a step down transformer. I have tried with 75 volts and it has the same issue. The motor runs fine through stepnet 800 rpms no problem on 48 v. The issue only seems to be when I try and move through mach. The motor doesn't stall it's just limited.

If you are using the parallel port, there are only two things that could limit the rpm.

    1) Motor tuning velocity.
    2) Kernel speed.

Note that when you change either one, you need to close and restart Mach3 before they will take effect.

And also, if your running in Demo mode, the kernel speed is locked at 25Khz. This may be your issue.

I will try that tonight I didn't know I had to restart the software after I changed the kernel speed I am running at 25khz now . I am not running in demo mode.

    ger21 thanks for the advice...

I have found that I can now get about 240 ipm from my Z. I have found that the system seems to run best at 45khz with a velocity setting of 6000 and acceleration setting of 1700 my rpm end up about 1150 rpm and it take about 4 seconds to run the length of Z 400mm. I think I can live with that. I now cant wait to start testing X & Y.

    Thanks again

    Don

You might want to look at your feeds and speeds for the cutting tools you might be using. I don't know any 1/2" or smaller cutter that need over 100 IPM at 1500 RPM.

Without a higher speed spindle you should end up with cutting speeds less then 30 IPM for most things.
