Brand new mitutoyo height gauge..... (somewhat surprised, it works great..and i sorta like it! I think its the perfect "scale" for this size machine)
Whats in your Haimer? .....I'll show you mine if you show me yours....?
Whats in your engine? (broken tensioner)
And there it is!!!

Nice tool you built there. Lots of nifty one off work. Always wondered what a Hamier looked like inside .
so...the big question....what's the first real project you have for it?
may i suggest an automatic tool changer
Thanks gentlemen,
If the Haimer hadn't been mashed we would have never had occasion to perform exploratory surgery on it and expose its guts..still don't know where the measuring error is now coming from.
There is a pretty steep learning curve just to make stuff using the CAM software so it will be baby steps until that task is somewhat in hand. I don't see a automatic tool changer in the future. If it comes to that it will probably be a mid to full size factory machine with bells and whistles. The 'Grizz' is still a 'Grizz' regardless of the fancy clothes it's wearing.
I'm tickled about how it turned out and love to watch it make even a simple part.

Joey,
Right now there is no video..there are some disassembly pictures but they are pretty small and useless. I will admit stupidity here, I bought the first Haimer and it was promptly crashed in Z. I felt bad for Nick so I purchased a second Haimer and crashed it myself in exactly the same move as had been done before..a velocity Z right into the vise.
I don't feel these units should be thought of as consumable at there price tag of $400 dollars, but the manufacturer has no stateside repair facility and the cost of shipping back to Germany and the hoops you need to jump through almost preclude any repair...even minor calibrating.
I feel this is arrogant marketing on Haimers parts so I will do a little video on taking one of these apart just to show what the guts look like. I have not been able to find the source of the error post-crash, but cannot get the tool back to factory advertised tolerances although nothing appears to be bent, broken or twisted. There supposedly is some Voodoo involved with the factory setup but I haven't discovered what it is yet. I know a lot of folks have crashed these and finding the secret fix would make many peoples day!

OH CRAP. TWO OF THEM???

I die inside when I semi crash my $240 touch probe. I can’t imagine crashing a better tool. Get that control figured out, use cheaper tools in the mean time.
These should have an over travel switch that is wired into E-Stop. There is no reason that expensive tools are put at risk of simple mistakes.
I have one of the Ebay tool presetters on order that has this feature built in.
Well...yep, two of them.
A customer I do work for has a new Haas VF2 with Renishaw probe. Their operator did a 4th axis rapid by mistake and ripped the probe off. $3000 clams later all was good! I don't feel so bad now. I have been in contact with Haimer USA, have received a RGA and will send the first taster back to Germany for a rectal exam. Approx cost is between $150 and $250 plus the shipping to Haimer in Illinois. I guess that's better than a poke in the eye, huh!
This means the video I promised Joey won't happen as I don't want to rip the taster apart again. Nick has some larger pictures of our last disassembly that he said he would post.
I have been thinking about developing a rubber DTI or taster to avoid the problem with 'beginner crashes'..maybe one made from recycled cardboard or Styrofoam.

Off brand test indicators are cheap. I have a couple. They aren’t anywhere near Haimers, but they work surprisingly well.
I have always used a typical edge finder to locate parts in my manual mill and it works fine. The fancy new Grizz deserved the fancy new type of indicator so we bought the Haimer in the smaller ZeroMaster inch version.
I don't know how you could use a DTI to find the accurate edge of a part like you can with a edge finder or a device like a Haimer or a similar 3D style indicator, but to be honest, I haven't ever attempted it, I've been happy using the Starrett edge finder.

Stuart, I work in a gauge lab and do gauge repair.
That being said, I have never opened up a 3D taster. The video strikes my curiosity in the case I need to attempt a surgery on one.
I can offer poking around at it, but not being knowledgeable in Haimer repair or any other 3D taster for that matter it would likely be exploratory.
Here ya go Joey!! Extra Large!

Have you reviewed this video>
Jeff...
Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
Jeff,
Thanks for the video. I have done that same procedure repeatedly, right out of the box and over again after the crash and it still isn't reading accurately. I can get the concentricity dead nuts and adjust the nul to exactly zero and the thing still reads bonkers. It's off to Germany!
