Wow...I was out of town and came home to find these posts. Nick, you are a true craftsman and the video on Parkerizing was superb. I might be a bit biased though

A video talking about the work on the X ball nut after installing the linear rails... or the changes that had to happen to put it all back together! It might only apply to this particular conglomeration of parts and pieces.... idk , might be useful to someone down the road! Working on finishing up the enclsoure, welding, grinding, seam sealing with Sikaflex. Some of the other "random" pictures are small parts of the machine that have been finished and assembled.... waiting for the rest of the machine to be complete!

I also think you're a craftsman, and I thoroughly enjoy updates to this thread. When you were starting out I thought I'd be following in your footsteps with my own conversion, but you've left my ability (and bank account) in the dust! Really nice work.

    Atomarc,

Great job on the Grizz!! I just went through your google photo album. It is obvious your a multi-talented and really enjoy what you are doing in your shop there. I suspect the photos of the younger fellow is your son.

Sure looks like a lot of good times go on in that shop with you guys and the dog!

    jiggerinc & Chris D,

Thanks for the positive comments. Yes, I'm the old guy and Nick is my son. He is chronicling this build as he has the technical skills to do so, I'm just the simple wrench buster. We have broken the budget for sure but are committed to finish the project and enjoy sharing our day to day triumphs and failures with all the folks on the forum. My working career and my interests have allowed me to build up a shop that has many of the tools to facilitate a project like this and we realize that many folks probably don't have these resources. Hopefully the posts and pictures don't come off as being boastful, that is not our intent...we're here to share our project, learn and to see what other members are building.

    Stuart,

You and your son Nick are, from what we can see, having a great time. I am certain all of us old farts would be thrilled to be in your shoes. Working with your son, building a cool machine, making it "your own" in the process. For everyone here in the "zone", that is the "Cat's ass". Enjoy this time, enjoy the build, and worry not if you thing it is being "Boastful". From our point of view, you are not being "boastful", you are having a great time with your son doing some really cool stuff. I'm certain all of us out here, wish we were doing the same!

Enjoy my friend, the years tick by, and the time with family ticks by even faster! I hope to do to the same with my grandkids, --- missed the change with my sons!

    Chris D.

Sanding, washing, welding, bondo, primer, sikaflex........messy things. And wood! no machine is complete with at least one piece of "wood" Tomorrow the lower box and electrical enclosure will get sand blasted and painted.

Ha Ha...yep, the paint is dry, some of it anyway. The enclosure should be painted by tomorrow but the machine is yet to come. We picked a color combo that is 'faux Haas' although that may be a bit camp for many folks. Assembling the thing takes a fair amount of time..just finding all the little pieces is like a Easter Egg hunt.

Nick should have several pictures of the progress, so far, by this evening, so stay tuned. No one is more anxious to get this thing on the road than we are..it has been like an elephant giving birth, long and hard!

Ask and you shall receive!!! ...... Mister! = ) hehe

Some photos from the last 2 days... My favorite part of a build!!! assembly! The base is coming together nicely! I'm digging it ....... the last remaining "to do's" sand / primer / paint enclosure. assemble enclosure... set enclosure on base....paint machine castings...... assemble machine...... install machine in enclosure.... wire / plumb.

(paint, casters, drawer frame & slide, drawer slides....grommet)

(creative use of "drawer slides" ........ "6 bucks my man!" )

(currently waiting on a Mcmaster order to finish the plumbing....)

(super rad ABS clamps for oil lines)

    (coolant return clamp... machined ABS)

(power draw bar foot petal.....VFD on... foot-petal "no work" )

(Amazing what a little paint does for whats essentially a piece of flatbar heated with a torch and bent in the bench vise! )

(because more gauges make things look cooler...)

(the stainless drawer was made from a scrap table....... plasma cut.......sheet metal break.... scuff-n-buff.. pop-rivet.....boom! )

    (much better!)

(laying out the air related stuff.... regulator filter / quick-exhaust for the intensifier......)

Just wanted to say I am enjoying your build thread and videos. I bet for every one CNC build on cnczone there are hundreds that go unknown and undocumented. Thanks for taking the time to document. As for the Hass colors....lets hear it...USA USA USA USA USA USA! Its not campy at all. If anything a big old green Grizzly bear is campy. I really like the industrial theme. As long as we are on the subject of things I think are stupid...why on earth would Grizzly make a commemorative edition lathe or mill? Would some one really get persuaded into a sale because of some big old commemorative edition emblem? Sorry if some people here really like it. I did my G0602 in Hass colors too. Still runs great! I picked up my first mill a G0704 in 2012. Converted to CNC right away. The hobby is quite addicting. You know when you decide a forklift is a good idea things are probably getting out of hand. Still have the G0602 but picked up a bigger mill recently. Parts are still only as good as the idiot behind the keyboard.

    Turbo442,

Thanks for the kind words and for sharing the pictures of your machines...the lathe is interesting and the Haas is very cool..is it for hobby or professional purposes?

As for the forklift...who can live without one, not me!

It's a hobby machine but I don't mind using it to make money once in a while. Running a paid job right now as I type this. 15.5"x25" steel part. Electron microscope shipping fixtures that needs to ship from taiwain to US on short 4 day notice. About 8 different parts and some welding to boot. $280 worth of steel. This is about the max size this machine can handle in Y. I think the travel is 16.125 I can go up to 17 if I really have to. X is 30 z is 20.

The enclosure is offically painted and drying! WOW! what a lot of work that there pesky enclosure has been! = ) Stuart and I both agree this enclsoure has been as much if not more "work" then the mill its self. Happy to move onto other things no doubt... once the paint dries the enclosure can be installed on the base.... then paint the machine castings....... then bobs your uncle?

I'm new to this solar stuff but I'll assume that "grid tie" means connected to the grid (duh)..yes, our system is tied into the grid (PG&E) after permits and inspections and forms being done. The array was installed by a outfit located nearby that has several offices throughout California. They did stupendous work, all tied into my local network with neat software that show KW output in real time.
