    Default Building CNC Mill

I am fairly new to the CNCZONE forum and I hope I am posting this in the right place here!

Recently a friend purchased a small China made CNC engraver. Being good with computers he asked me to set it up. It was my very first experience with CNC of any type but I will admit I was immediately hooked. I learned the Mach 3 software and we have been engraving up a storm. I taught myself AUTOCAD Inventor and AUTOCAD HSM CAM. I quickly outgrew the capability of my friends little router and decided I wanted something that could do more, like make parts from steel. I have been a amateur machinist for 15 years so I have some background just not in CNC.

So I jumped in with both feet and will document my build here. I know many of you will laugh but I am building it as I go along not from plans.....

I did a lot of reading and research (never enough) before starting to purchase components. Here is what I ended up buying -

    Planet CNCUSB Controller with Software

    A package deal with-
3 1600 OZ Stepper Drives (Dual Shaft)
    3 Motor Drivers
    3 Big power supplies

    A 1.5hp 3PH AC motor
    A VFD for Motor
A PWM controller so I can control Spindle speed from CNC software

A 1.5" stroke Air Cylinder actuator for quick change tool release
Heavy duty linear guide rails 3 Sets (Surplus)
    Lead Screws

I made my own Anti-Backlash nuts they are big and heavy duty

I also made my own Spindle

The table is 1 1/4 Inch thick and weighs around 300 pounds alone.

The machine is already so heavy it cannot be budged by hand, not even an inch and I am a big guy!

    So here is my progress...

    Randy,

I really like your machine. It shows what can be done with effort and passion. After seeing it in action I would bet there isn't much of anything now that will come as a real challenge to you. Great job and thank you for popping back in with the video.

Knowing how hard steel is to cut , I take my hat off to you sir that is great what you have done .I was dismantling a big machine the other day on a site could not resist taking the lineal rails and bearings that were going to trash ,I'm thinking surface grinder.
