Hoss,
Which mill base are you are you using if you feel like spilling....

FWIW, you don't need the Schmitt hex inverter to buffer the signal if you are using a BOB already unless you really need/want another LED to blink
http://www.hvwtech.com/products_view.asp?ProductID=95
Or from Schmatech: http://www.shumatech.com/web/products/dro-350/add-ons
I use optical limits on my router and did not use/require an additional buffer. I recently posted a "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIV6Mnac1Y8"]YouTube - speed sensor of my milling a circuit for the QRB1114 photo reflector.

Thanks for the tip Jay.
Times must be gettin tough, the chinese aren't even making them like they used to.
The first pic is the base casting I got from LMS a couple years ago for the Freak and
the next 2 show the one I just got yesterday.
Missing a lot of meat near the column mount.
Guess I'll have to live with it.
I won't be mounting the column like they do anyhow.

I ordered a base back in Feb and recently had recieved it and mine looks the same way with all that material missing. But mine is red from Harbor Freight.
Shows that they come from the same place but with different paint.
How long did it take? really 7-8 mos Cost$?
The LMS was $60 and in stock, Grizzly was $45 but back ordered till Nov 27th at least.

cost me $22 and some change shipped. took about 7months
Accurate as can be Bob, couldn't ask for any more.
7 months Guess it WAS on a slow boat from china
Got some parts for the head from Grizzly, I must not have stated that I wanted NEW replacement parts.
The spindle housing is definitely a used component.
Oh well, it'll do.

Yeah I called about it and they ended up giving me a coupon for like $10 off $50 or more, that was valid for like 3 days. I guess that justifies waiting 7 months.
Made a tad more progress on the pendant.
Have the keypad and switch array completed.
Was one switch short of what I needed but found one pretty close in the bin.
Helps to be a packrat.

Hoss, try an epoxy/granite fill to put back some of the missing "meat" in your mill parts. It's be extremely easy to do on that scale.
Best,
BW
That's a good idea Bob, I'll wait till I work out the column mount first.

Holy Crap! 200,000 Views!
Haven't completed near as many projects in the 2nd 100K as in the first
but they've stepped up in complexity.
The Mill Console took quite a bit of time as did the 16 Tool ATC.
Also got into the Automatic Tool Probing and the ATC 3.
Dabbled with Incremental Sheet Metal Forming and started the Trunnion Table.
Making customer parts has eaten a bit of time as well but I'm not complaining.
Gotta keep busy and out of trouble.
In recognition, I'm offering a Special Deal for members and viewers here on the Zone.
Thanks for all the help, really appreciate all the great info provided by all the contributors.

Well, I gotta say that your work is definitely an inspiration. A lot of what you have done, I wish to do myself eventually, especially the ATC. That is one of the things Ive put down as an absolute must have when I finally have a machine of my own.
When I came here, I was looking at the possibility of trying to buy a desktop mill that had the options I want, but after seeing what you've managed to do, now I know its possible to build a machine exactly how I want instead of having to buy a factory built machine and having to accept it how it comes.
Thanks Adam,
I'm not one for leaving things be either.
There are some snobs that think making parts for your machine is somehow a bad thing.
I laugh because they just don't get it.
It's fun.
They can go buy their Corvette, I'll buy an old Camaro and spend my time hot rodding it.
I have, and it was fun.
On to more fun, I have the boards mounted in the pendant, now to wire it up.
Had to move some components from the bottom of the main board to the top so it would sit flat.
This should be pretty cool for $15.

That's looking great Hoss, I've been planning to build a new pendant too and the enclosure you have is perfect, thanks for posting the link to it. I'm thinking to have a couple of pots in the upper section also instead of the single pot in the one I have now. This enclosure will allow for more switches too.
Good thinking on using the keypad buttons, I do allot of electronics work too and most of it very small work. I have had some trouble finding very small, quality wire for these circuits but one thing I have found that may be of some help to you on a project like this is I have several old Centronics type printer cables and they are a great source of small, good hook up wire in many colors and very flexible. I just cut the Centronics connector off and strip the outer sheath off and expose a gold mine (to me) of wires.
You may be all setup with good wiring but I thought this may be of some help at this point of your project.
BTW: I completely agree with you on the fun of modding EVERYTHING !
Looking forward to seeing the finished pendant.
Best,
Steve
Hey Steve,
You're right, I sacrificed several computer cables when I built the console, those thin wires made things easier.
I do have a spool of equally thin ribbon wire, you can see the rainbow colors in the 3rd pic top left.
It's too small to strip the ends with my wire strippers so I just use my teeth,
I'd imagine they make some smaller strippers somewhere.
Keep up the mods.
