MTW MD001 CNC Conversion

I am converting my second RF45 style machine to CNC and thought I would share the parts made to complete project. Currently I have most of the parts machined for the 3 axis. I am using 20mm ball screws for the X and Y and 25mm for the Z. My method does require some lite machining of the casting for clearance and to create interlocking areas for the ball nuts. Soon as I format the drawings I will get them posted.

Nice work so far. I've been contemplating an IH clone mill, so I'll be following your conversion closely.

Any sort of quality control issues on your particular mill?

Quality control is very limited on these machines. X and Y Axis seem pretty good. Z Axis will need some more work, ways are tight on one end loose on the other. Should n't be that much work to repair. They use lots of Bondo to make up for poor finishing of the castings. You just have to keep in mind these are a hobby quality machine and really are limited. But, If you work through the issues, and install CNC with decent parts you can really make some nice quality parts, just probably not on a production level. I am guessing for about $6000-7000 including machine and depending on skill level, you can have a nice machine. If your not a DIY kind of person or need light production then I would look at the Novakon Torus Pro or Tormach.

An Enco 45 converted to CNC. Sold after completing MD001. The pictures above show the pulley setup I was contemplating, but decided to go direct drive with couplers. Works great rapids set at 300IPM

May have the MD001 for sale soon, Looking for Haas VMC.

Here are the Solidworks files for the parts used to convert the MTW MD001 to CNC. Should work on most RF45 type machines. 20mm ballscrews on X and Y and 25mm on Z. These will require some light machining on the Y saddle and also the Z slide. Nema 34 size motors direct coupled to the ballscrews.

Yeah it's pretty much same machine as a Charter Oak. Have lots of money into it, so will be a good deal for someone. Easy to rent a little box truck with a lift gate.
