Do you have the type of nut with a cross over tube?
This video would help.
Sounds like you're missing some balls.

I had a spare ball nut laying around and I wanted to see what made it tick. Is there a specific method to getting them back in? Seems when I do it, the screw goes only in one direction.

It's the second type displayed in this video. Its in Chinese.
There have been a couple folks repack them on here, IIRC they pried out one of the plastic plugs to reload the balls.

You can't pry out the plastic plug, it has a lip on the inside. It is the return path for the bearings.
here's one of the threads.
loaded the balls back in from the end.

I actually just got them back in. not sure how, but I just kinda dropped them in and kept roating the screw up and down. lather rinse repeat.
I had the same problem when I repacked mine and I have the same nuts. It will only spin in one direction when you get some of the balls between those plugs and not in the correct circuit.
I gave directions for putting the balls back in one of these nuts last year for another member, it is in post 112 in this thread

I was glad I did take them apart as I found a few bits of plastic in there and 2over size balls in one nut. He supplied a small bag of extra balls so there where no problems.
