    Keling drivers trippled the speed/power of my machine!

    I just wanted to share my experience with Keling. I ordered A C10 bob, one 4030 and three 5042 drivers on Monday, I got them on Thursday. I bought them to replace a Mechatronics 4 axis board in a plasma cutting table. The Mechatronics is 1/8 step 2.5 amps per axis. I had it running at maximum capacity until smoke came from one of the allegro 3977 chips. With the drivers set for 2.5A it would do 200 IPM at best, and the motors never even got warm.

    I wired up the new Keling drivers, set them for 1/8 step and 2.3A peak current. The machine will now easily do 700 IPM and has noticeably more holding and running torque. The motors get very hot, I'm monitoring them and I may need to reduce the current further. The motors are only rated 1.7A per phase.

    My only complaint so far is that the current setting chart in the manual for the 5042 is backwards. I initially started with the current at the lowest setting, and my motors were smoking hot within a matter of minutes. That's when I decided to measure the actual current, and it turns out that it was on the highest setting. If you go by the marking on the dip switches, ON = OFF. The microstepping setting chart appears to be correct.

    I can only assume the Mechatronics driver was not putting out the rated 2.5 amps current. I put an ammeter in one of the coil circiuts of the Keling drivers and the output matches whatever it's set at. I never tested the output current of the Mechatronics board.

    If your motor rated at 1.7A, it is better to run at 1.7A or lower

    Your motors won't last long running them at a higher current than they're rated for.

    Did you change the voltage?

    I didn't change anything except the drivers (and added the BOB).

    I'm running a 24 volt power supply. I just checked the motor specs again.

    Unipolar connection
    volts 6.00
    amps 1.76
    resistance 3.40
    inductance 8.4
    torque 168

    Bipolar connection
    volts 8.50
    amps 1.25
    resistance 6.80
    inductance 33.4
    torque 210

    So it looks like I should be running them at 1.25 amps. I've read a lot of post saying they will be ok as long as you keep them under 200F. Mine get up to about 150-160.

    Looking for

    I need to replace two motors KL23H2100-30-4B (Dual Shaft), but I don't know where to ask for them. Any idea ?

    As a general rule of thumb: Motors should ALWAYS be kept below 170 degrees. Actually, they should not be allowed to get THAT hot.

    Hey Fiero!

    Your Mechatronics board- did you get that puppy from ebay? My machine also runs a mechatronics board that I got from a dude named Fernando on eBay, and I have long wondered if I'm getting the full 425 oz/inches out of my Keling motors. Over the weekend I blundered into one of the control cables, ripping it out of the socket and maybe frying the board.

    Either way, it's great to hear that Keling's other products are as stellar as his motors. I've been looking on their website at the 4 channel Nema 23 kits with 425 oz/in motors, but I don't need that many motors since I already have two.

    I have bought a Mechatronics to the e-bay seller autohec I have the same problem in my EMCO F1 mill, I can't go more beyond of 240mm/min on G0, then I have increased the voltage from 24 to 36 then I got speeds of 1500 mm/min, but with a low rate of acceleration. At cause of the new voltage I got the Allegro IC drivers hot and in the process of re-locate the board in front of the cooland, one wire of the Z axis came out of the socket as happened to Gibbsonsrock, of course the IC driver died. Do not try to replace te IC, the new one will die to, that was my case. I have checked the current with the only axis live I have, and assuming than the IC driver is giving the 35 volts than the data-sheet shown, the max current measured was 0.4 A with one 282 Oz/inch motor running at 1500 mm/min ( 1500RPM. in my case ). Seem than this driver board do not give the 2.5 Amperes offered.

    The Keling packages are not really kits, but more of a guideline. You can buy all of the separate parts for about the same price as the package--So mix and match as you please. If you only want two motors and 4 drives with a power supply, it will be fine--and cost less.

    The current will vary depending on RPM and load. At no-load and speed, current requirement is very little.
