    Keling 8056D Rocks!

I tried the newer digital controller from Keling (8056D) and it works great! As many of you know, steppers like to squeal at idle and also have some terrible resonances at certain frequencies. The 8056 has a mode on button 4 so if you momentarily flip it on and off within 1 second, it will poll the motor inductance and tune itself. The motors are dead quiet at idle and smooth as silk all the way through. I tried this after having my G540 show up DOA. The X axis died after i just finished tuning the motors. I found that the 8056D was much easier to use and the motors stay lukewarm at idle. I am very happy with this controller and probably will not purchase another G540. It was more if a pain to terminate the cables than to mount 4 drivers. I build several machines per week and I use Phoenix contact connectors...takes 30 seconds to terminate a cable and i dont need reading glasses and tiny fingers like in the DB9 shells.

    Just my opinion....

After reading your post I orders the digital driver yesterday and they will be here in the morning.
    Talk about service!

Can't wait to try it out.

I have ordered lots from there. They do have great service. Let me know how you like the drivers. Mine run super smooth and cool. Remember, just flip the switch on and off quickly and you will hear a little buzz from the motor. I think it is switch 4. the same switch is used to set 1/2 current holding.

Can you give us a source for these connectors?

    Thanks

    Tom,
Here is the info for the connectors:
Part numbers for the Phoenix M12 insulation displacement connectors, both male and female.
    1521591 – Male
    1521601 – Female

They are a little on the high side but they are super fast, robust and you will never have to worry about it being your weak link. Be sure you torque them sufficiently. I usually leave 2-3 threads showing.

Cheeta, could you provide an example of how/where your using these connectors? At the motor, enclosure, etc.? Do they offer a surface mount?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Bob,
They do offer a flying lead panel mount so I use that at the enclosure. It has leads already in it so I simply connect to the Keling drivers. From there, I terminate the cables with the IDC connectors. That is where the ease of use comes in. I set it up so that any end looking "into" the enclosure is female so no potential for a metal shaving or anything to get in and short those pins if for any reason the connector is open. So, enclosure gets female then wire gets one male and one female, then motor gets male. I have to be able to sell replaceable cables and controllers so I am forced to put a mate on the enclosure. If you want to save some $$, you can run the cable right into your enclosure and use Altech cable grips to secure and strain relief. (www.alliedelec.com)Then you only have to terminate the end of the cable and the motor pigtails. The Phoenix connector is set up so you run your cable through a weathertight collar, pull the wires down through the numbered slots, slip the keyed fitting on and tighten...thats it!
Takes less than 30 seconds to terminate and now you have a robust, locked, dirtproof and low impedance connection.

    Bob,
One more afterthought. The panel mounts are PG9 threads to mount to enclosure. If you go that route, you have to supply the locknuts. They also sell PG9 locknuts at Allied and they are also made by Altech.

    Thanks for that info.

I did take a look at the Phoenix site and viewed the PDF's, especially the PDF that describes the cable connection. That is unbelievable easy to use!

Do you have the part number for the flying lead panel mount you mentioned?

My goal is to make my machine as modular as possible, these should really help.

I see your located in Stillwater, I'm in New Prague myself, so its nice to find out that there is a local supplier for these as well.

Bob...or neighbor he he he, I used to know a guy they called Chainsaw from New Prague, he raised tiger cubs on his farm.

That is exactly why i went that route. I wanted modularity and ease of use. The connectors are a little expensive but I used to use Molex and had some customer complaints about them. With Phoenix....zero. Anyway, the part numbers are 1693762 and 1693788

Cheeta, I'm going to pick your brain some more...

Why did you go Keling digital and not Keling analog or Gecko?

Have you tried the Pro Tuner software yet? Mine has an RS232 jack to hookup to the PC for fine tuning. Guess you must hook them up one at a time?
