    Default KL 4030 driver problems?

    Hi all,

I have a automation technologies 3 axis kit (though its on a lathe right now so just 2 axis) This includes the kl 4030 drivers, a 36v 8.8 amp power supply and 287oz/in 3amp steppers

I seem to be able to stall the motors easily so I checked the amperage with a meter running from the power supply to one of the 4030s. Even though I have the switches in the right settings I never see more than 1 amp on the meter. If I stall the motors with my hand I only see 1 amp at the stall.

My question is: shouldn't I see close to 3 amps at the stall?

Maybe I am doing this all wrong? Mach3 is my machine controller. Is there any other setting that would help?

    Thanks in advance

    Kev

the current taken from the power supply will be about 2/3 of the motor current you have set the driver to

unless you have an expensive meter from FLUKE that can read the complex current waveform
your meter will not be able to correctly display the current

the stepper motor current does not increase when the motor is stalled as its limited by the stepper driver

double check the motor connections -
with 8 wire motors if you wire a pair of coils so one coil is anti-phased the magnetic fields will cancel
normally when the voltage is applied to the coils the inductance limits the current

when the coils inductance is cancelled , the normal current control is lost ,
this results in excessive current in the coil and the drives protection circuit operating

is this the wiring diagram you have used

    Thanks John for the reply.

I just have a cheap meter but i still never see over 1 amp even though the driver is set to 3 amps. I rechecked the wiring it seems to be correct. Maybe I am asking too much from this set up?

The best way to see the current is to meter it at the driver input. The motor waveforms are way to complex to even start to measure with an analogue meter Even with a scope and active current probe its going to show you peaks and varying duty cycle current. Max current should occur just before stall. The current limit on most drivers is on a pulse by pulse basis. That means as soon as the pulse reaches the set limit it shuts the pulse off.

Can you explain "meter it at the driver input" Does that mean measure amperage from the power supply to the driver? If so that's what I did and I get only 1 amp max

OK, I set up an arm on the motor to measure the torque (see pic). It is 10in so with the KL23H276-30-8b motors I should get 28 oz at stall but I only get about 14. So it looks like I am only getting half power even at the 3 amp setting. Do any of you have any ideas? Maybe I have a bad driver or the set up is wrong? I thought the wiring was correct but I will check again. Its odd that it is 1/2 the torque so maybe this is a clue - what would cause this?KL 4030 driver problems?-lathe-jpg

Not at "stall", but holding torque. See if you can hang 28oz from it without it moving.

Make sure you have micro stepping turned off. Then again the driver may be limiting on each pulse that is only on for part of the waveform. You are reading average AMPS (RMS) at the input. I don'\t know why you are not seeing close to full (at least 2/3"'s at stall ) unless the driver is just not set right or its not designed to be run at the full load. We have a built in high side linear current circuit in our controllers and an app to read it real time. it takes a lot to load a motor to its full rated torque but I can get the Geckos we use to show up to 2.8A under a "close to" stall. Once a motor stalls the current starts to drop off.

    Gerry,

it cannot take 14 oz without moving. At 9.5 oz it will hold but any more and the motor turns. This is at the end of the 10 in leaver. Any ideas as to why?

    Torchhead,

I turned the micro stepping off on the driver. It did not seem to change things

Either the motor is not rated correctly and the torque is overstated OR
The driver is overstated and is not delivering the current it is set for.
Right now you have 95 OZ-in motors based on your load testing.

Do they get hot just sitting locked up?
Have you tried a higher Amps setting on the driver?

Yes I have the amp setting at the highest level. When I go lower there is a noticeable drop in torque. I believe I must have a set of bad electronics. Thanks for the help everyone. Does anyone have experience with the leadshine drivers are they more reliable?

    Hi Kev

what details for the KL 4030 drive do you have ?

the 3 page PDF on the Kelling web site only has details for 6 out of the 8 dip switches

do you have any information what switches M4 & M8 do ???
may be the setting for one or both is responsible for your problem

    Hi John

I do not know what switch 4 and 8 do. But I will check into it - thanks
