Those motors are a very poor choice for that machine. Iirc, those motors need over 100V to get maximum performance from them. Smaller, low inductance motors would be much faster. Better quality drives can also give better performance.
Hello All, I have a 4 axis kit from A.T. on a Taig Micro Mill using 3 axis at the moment. My problem is I can't seem to get the feeds above 18-IPM. I have tried what I believe to be all combinations of settings in Mach3 and LinuxCNC to no avail. The Z axis is set a little slower. any faster on any axis' and I lose steps. Even when I loosen the slides, lead nuts, and lead bearings it doesn't seem to make difference. Does anybody have any ideas???
We have a similar set-up at a maker space near Me and it gets nearly 100-IPM! The only difference is it has Gecko Drives and slightly smaller steppers (the motion control system is from A.T. as well)
I'm thinking I need more amps and/or volts???

I thought I was buying a matched system from Automation Technology, I knew the drivers were on the low end....Do You know of a resource that explains exactly what is happening when a pulse is sent, the timing issues with Dir and Pul and the different parameter settings? I would like to know exactly how these steppers are controlled and what tends to make them fail. Thanks again..
I know that some mills larger than yours have used those Automation Technologies 425a steppers. Those were recommended to me for my mini mill conversion and I have them (but have not hooked them up). Best of luck.

150" ipm ??? really? Do you realize that is 3000 rpm (20 tpi leadscrew) and 80,000 pulses per second (the torque curve ends at 2000rpm)?? According to the torque curve for this motor that would be almost NO torque at 80 volts with a KL8060 driver that is rated at 6 amps. Your package is 36volts with 3 amp. KL4030 drivers.

I wouldn't count on any stepper giving you more than 1200-1500 usable rpm's.
Most people run their steppers at less than 1000 rpm.
What drives are you using?
With a very good drive, and 48V, and a low inductance (<2mH), you might be able to get around 2000 rpm with your machine.

Taig micro mill has always had a 20tpi lead screws. You said 150 ipm with this hardware but that is PHYSICALLY impossible! You could have saved me a lot of money and time 10 months ago if You only knew Your products and how to read and do math instead of instantly blaming the customer and everybody else. I'm sick and tired of running around in circles and playing games with You. You shouldn't hang up the phone on Your customers and answer Your email!!!!!
Cayenne, are you using the stock lead screws or did you do the ball screw conversion to reduce backlash?

I am converting a different mill, a G0704, and am going to buy ballscrews. I also have the 425oz steppers (though I know they are less popular than the 570s.
What is Your lead screw pitch?
The ball screws I intend to buy are 16mm screws that will have a 5mm pitch.
