Default KL-8070 Stepper Driver Over Current Protection

    Alcon,

I could use some help, I recently converted my G0704 to CNC, and was in the middle of cutting my first real part when the Z axis driver stopped working, X&Y were still working.

I'm using the following relative components:
    C11 Breakout Board
KL-8070D Digital Stepper Driver (Z Axis)
    NEMA 34 - 906 oz/in (Z)
    KL-5056D Digital Stepper Driver (X & Y Axis)
    NEMA 23 - 570 oz/in (X & Y)
    KL-600-48 Switching Power Supply Unit

I will have to double check the microswitch settings, but I am 99% sure I had it set as the following:

    8070D
    1. off
    2. on
    3. on
    4. off
    5. off
    6. off
    7. on
    8. on

The error I was receiving, per the KL-8070D Driver, according to the flashing pattern of the red LED was the following from the manual:
    Over-current Protection:
Over-current protection will be activated when continuous current exceeds 16A or in case of short circuit between motor coils or between motor coil and ground, and RED LED will turn on once within each
    periodic time (3 s).
Is this a possible/likely PSU, Driver or motor problem?

    Thanks in advance,
    Zach

    Zach540,

Is it possible the stepper motor wires (wiring) shorted out intermittently?

Check your wiring, solder connections etc...

On a separate note, your power supply is marginal.

    Jeff,

While I suppose it is possible, I don't think that is the case, mainly due to my powering the system and electronics down, and back on, and it worked again, though only for a short while. I'll check all the steppers wiring and plugs tomorrow morning.

At the same time, I've had the system on and running for hours, moving it around, calibrating the axis, etc and never had the issue until today when I was trying to take a cut with it, which was relatively light, only .010 DOC at the time, and a slow feed rate.

    Zach

ETA: What I meant by that is, while it is possible, after the reboot, I moved the Z up and down a bit, and it worked the way it should've, until it came time to cut again, which is when it failed on me for the second time.

    Zach540,

If your work is 3D, the Z axis is exercised much more vigorously.

That would surely raise a wiring issue if there was one.

    Jeff,

Negative, it was not 3D, it was failing to raise the Z up to safe height before going to create the next depth of cut, and it was simply contouring the part.

    Zach

ETA: The part was one of the side supports for a power drawbar, all 2D work.

    Zach540,

Gib on the Z too tight?

    Jeff,

Never thought to check that, as the movement seemed fine with no cutting load on it, while maintaining little to no play. I'll check and adjustment the gib tomorrow and relube the ways while I'm at it, and see if that does it.

    Thanks,
    Zach
