I purchased the G0704 CNC conversion kit mounts, the ballscrews and all the steppers and electronics to convert my G0704. I got everything put together and played with it a little bit. I tried cutting a circle as a test. It was noticeably out of round so I measured the backlash and I had about 0.020 on both the X and Y axis. That seemed excessive, so I played with the gibs and didn't really change the backlash, I decided I would take everything apart and check it.

When I got the Y axis apart, the ballscrew had some play in the bearing. I tightened up the nut what little I could and the play felt very slightly better. I put it back together again and now the unsupported end of the ballscrew wobbles significantly. I didn't do that previously. I took it apart and put it back together a couple of times. I can still feel some play, but I can't seem to get rid of the wobble. I don't see how I could have bent the ballscrew, but I haven't checked it yet.

That leaves me with a few questions:

Could I have damaged the bearing? How could I verify that I have/haven't?

Should I be able to feel any play between the ballscrew and the mount?

What should I torque the nuts holding the ballscrew to the mounts to?

Any other thoughts on what might be wrong?
