    dim layers

now running a nework version of autocad 2000 due to "upgrades "
    in our systems
so now i need to name a layer "dim" before i can dimension anything
and you can only have one dim layer ,no dim1/dim2/dim/3 etc
also defaults to "dim" after selecting multi layers

is there a way to change this ?

    it's doing my nut in

You define what layer the dimensions go to in the format dimensions dialogue box. You are not constrained to only "dim" layer.

Haven't used 2000 in a long time, but in 2002 I can create as many dim layers as I want. Dimensions are placed on the current layer, but can easily be moved to different layers.

It's been many years since I have used 2000 but I believe I have 2K at home. I will look at this tonight and post tomorrow if nobody beats me to it....

    Angry

    sorry acad 2002

it was fine until we started with the network version now it asks for a layer
called dim to be created before it will let you dimension anything
if i dimension something it automaticaly selects dim layer instead of creating on the current layer
you then have to select the layer your working on to continue
or you create everything on the dim layer
i can still create layers "dim2" etc but cannot dimension stuff on them
as you can imagine this is most frustrating
spoke to our IT exxpurts but they dunno either (no suprise there then)

Does the current layer change as soon as you click a dimension button? And does it change back after placing the dimension?

I couldn't find anything on this on the Autodesk discussion groups.

I spent last evening at the hospital getting my son's finger stitched up - so I did not check on this. Sorry.

    Mike,

dimensioning in your AutoCAD has been customized so that dimensions go automatically to dim layer. Pure AutoCAD doesn't do that. Ask the guy who takes care of your AutoCAD.

Right click on the dimension button, and choose "customize". Then right click it again, and choose "properties", and tell me what it says under "macro assigned to this button".

ger, get to the customise dialog box but in the properties tab it just gives a tip "select a toolbar item to view or modify it's properties"
