    Polylines

I use Gerry's macro to create the g-code for all of my parts. I usually save all my SW parts as DWG files then use PEDIT in autocad to join the segments before running the macro.

Right now I'm trying to take the DXF files on Gary's Wooden Clock page and join the segments which make up the gear teeth. The problem is the segments won't join. I'm managing to get a few of them to join, but most often I select all the segments, hit enter, and then get "0 segments added."

Anyone have any ideas? I'm using autocad 2004.

    Thanks,
    -Andy

I haven't seen the actual file, but this problem is usually caused because the line segments aren't mating up exactly. Either they overlap slightly or don't quite touch.

Zoom in real close and look at them.

Another possible problem is that the lines might be on different Z depths.

At max zoom they appear to be touching. When I place the cursor on different points they all show a z of 0.0000.

This is irritating. I'll see if I can open it in a different program and save it as another format.

Post the file and I'll take a look at it.

The piece I'm trying is the gear. I managed to get the teeth to join by using the dxf editor in solidworks and saving it as a DWG.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong when I try to do it in AC, or if there is something wrong with the file.

They're not touching. Zoom in real close, a couple times and you'll see.

A couple teeth did join, so I used array to make a full gear that lined up. Here ya go.

Thanks Gerry. I think Gary made the original models in Solidworks. I guess it didn't save perfectly when he converted them.

I managed to get one of the parts done from the 2003 clock. I just cut it out of 1/2" mdf to see how well it would work. This clock stuff is very cool, but I'll probably wait until I finish my new router before I build one.

If you set your UNITS to 8 decimal places, then you might be able to see that the endpoints are not the same in the LIST or PROPERTIES commands.

Since AutoCAD 2004, the PEDIT command has has a MULTIPLE option, which will cause the JOIN command to ask for a FUZZ distance. The FUZZ distance lets you specify a tolerance and JOINTYPE for non matching endpoints.

It's had a multiple option since at least 2002, and I'm pretty sure even earlier. I personally don't use this option, because imo if the endpoints don't match, it's drawn wrong.
