Are the parts individually selectable (ie are they solids or wire frame)?
i have a dxf file sent to me that has all the parts on one layer. is there a easy way to put each part on a seperate layer. thanks for the help
Are the parts individually selectable (ie are they solids or wire frame)?
the parts are 2d and are selectable. they are not complicated. just parts drawn with polylines. no extrusions, etc. thanks
My first thought is to first Create all the layers you need.
Then click on a part and use the property (ctrl-1) box to change the layer.
How many parts are there?
here is one of the files.
wjbzone, i opened the dxf file and changed each layer color so i could see what was on each layer. the question i have is why does the bottom only show model tab and layout tab but not the layers. found the layers tab on the top. am able to move to different layers lol. now need to know how to select a single object to move it to another layer. like i said, i am new to this. lol

The tabs on the bottom do not show layers. You can setup multiple layout tabs with a viewport in each tab that will show one layer at a time. (using Current VP Freeze).
I would just turn off all the layer except the one I am working on. Why do you want to isolate the parts?
If you select the object, then, while it's selected, change to the new layer you want it on in the layer dropdown box, it'll be moved to that layer.
You can also use the properties window to change an entities layer. I keep the properties window open, set to autohide on the side of the screen.
Different versions of AutoCAD may have different options visible on the screens as well. Which can confuse the issue.

would like to thank everyone for their answers. am now able to move the parts to different layers. the dxf file is from the designer of the furniture frame. i needed to seperate each part so i could learn how to run the part through mastercam and get the toolpath and nesting info to route the part. again thanks
