3D AutoCAD design for cnc router

I am new to cnc routing but have experience with AutCAD. I am interested in using a cnc router to cut out and rout pockets for a custom bass, but I'm not sure how to start the design. If I build a 3D model in AutoCAD, does it need to account for the thickness of the router bit or will it follow an outside or inside edge (how does it know which to use)?

It depends on the CAM software you use.

Thanks for the reply, ger21. The wood shop I will use says it has Visual Mill to translate. Does this sound right?

Model it actual size, and Visual Mill will take care of the rest.
You should ask them what file format the model needs to be in, and if they have any special requirements for the model.
