Another Mexican after pics of your DIY CNC

    Hey guys and girls,
I fired up a post in the general club house section but ill do it here too.
Names Ivan from SE Melbourne and i want to build a CNC.
I'm a toolmaker and am on extended holiday from work
So whats the deal with the DIY scene? Who's got one i can check out?
Are there many around? Can i see some pics?

I would want to build something thats up to machining 17 inch 3 peice wheels for Motorbikes. And plenty of other things mostly bike related.

The pic is of a turbo plenum for my bike i need to finish.

Any advice would be great thanks.

I believe most people DIY build gantry style CNCs, whereas those with the X2 mills etc... fit a conversion kit. Not sure how well a DIY gantry CNC is going to work for machining materials harder than aluminium.

I don't think I've ever seen a homebuilt machine with that type of capability. You best bet is probably to retrofit an old used machine.

Hmmm after a look around i think your right, but i think half the fun is building the machine itself.

    Ill keep on looking.

But if it doesn't work, you'll never have the other half.

    Thumbs up Here's one!

I'm surprised nobody has come up with a pic, so here you go. This is my effort at a mini-vmc. Not running yet, but getting there. The build is here: Mini VMC build log ...and here's the 'Zone thread

XYZ is 450 x 750 x 400 mm, so it would fit a 17" wheel. Actually, if you're turning the rim, you could probably do a centre for an 18" or 19" wheel

    Best regards,

    Jason

Thanks Jason, your mini mill would almost do me if it had a 4th axis.
And the new one looks the goods so far.

Just waiting on some quotes for ballscrews & nuts to convert my mill to cnc.....then make some brackets for the CB\GSXR thing sitting in the shed.......Why can't it be just one project at a time ???

    How about yourself ?
