Gareth - Greetings - Just now about 3 hours north(by car/bus) in The Bay of Islands -- Opua to be more precise (ohh that word again....).
Still getting the boat ready to launch. PM me and I'll pass my mobile to you Jim
Experience is the BEST Teacher. Is that why it usually arrives in a shower of sparks, flash of light, loud bang, a cloud of smoke, AND -- a BILL to pay? You usually get it -- just after you need it.

    Gareth

I'm in Melbourne and just starting as well.

I have limited skills and knowledge and so I am struggling with fundamentals that many take for granted.

At this point, I have a frame that enables manual x axis movement of a router. It is a hobby frame but rigid (no slop). I am building very cheap and have sourced bearings, assembly parts (meccano), threaded rod (1/2 inch bsf I think), stepper motors (secondhand), Usb stepper motor driver for 3 motors (x,y,z) and I am still hunting pulley wheels.

I have hopefully anticipated many problems but am still coming to terms with things like backlash.

Where are you at and what is your background and motivation?

    Regards

    Andy

Well i grew up in the bay of islands but have lived in aucks for 15 years now.

I am studying electronics at university and have done some CNC and CAD CAM papers also. I paint houses for a crust at present.

Basically i wanted to make a machine when i did my CNC papers but couldnt find free plans. I am a sculptor etc so it looks like a good way to make things to sell - and i would like to sell the machines too.

I'm looking into laser scanners etc also. Still just at the information gathering stage.

I will make an MDF machine initially.
