Where do I get a DC motor and controller from in Oz?

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a motor and controller for a small milling machine in the >500 watt range - I think I want DC, but I am open to other alternatives. Obviously I want to minimize spend, but right now I can't even find a supplier.

I am in Melbourne - does anybody know where I might find a supplier for this?

Cheers,

Pat

Have a look at Oatley Electronics.

What exactly are you looking for? Speed control? Position? Direction?

Latest Silicon Chip has a groovy speed controller. It monitors back EMF to determine and maintain speed.

Oatley has a 500W motor on special for $85.

These motors are typically used in electric scooters. Which is very handy, as there are some very cheap matching "scooter" motor controllers available.

Don't be afraid to deal internationally... there are some bargains to be had.
e.g. The same (or very close) 500W motors are available for 40 USD at http://tncscooters.com/product.php?sku=106120
I had two motors from TNC shipped to my door for 44 USD = 24 AUD each.

And that's before you find a bargain...

Of course, what you want to use the motor for will determine the suitability of such critters. (The big ol' scooter motors "cog" quite considerably)

Thanks for the replies - here is a bit more detail.

Basically I am after a spindle motor. I did have a KBIC controller and 500W 180V PM DC motor, but I used it on my lathe. I tried to get something similar from the supplier that I got that one from, but he had run aout and wasn't stocking them anymore.

This setup suited me, because all I had to do was put the controller in a box and wire to mains. I really don't want to mess around building power supplies, soldering up controller kits etc.

Think I paid somewhere around $200 for this setup.

Cheers,

Pat
