Locating aluminium bar in Melbourne

Hey all,
Has anyone in their various dealings had to locate and purchase scrap aluminium bar 80 mm minimum diameter? Or bigger as its easily turned down.

I am now not in a production machine shop any longer, of course you never need stuff untill you dont have access to it anymore!

I have rang around various scrap metal dealers for aluminium and prices range from $3.50 to $7 a kilo ( plus greedy services tax ( GST ))

Nearly all the dealers have no idea what they have on hand in the scrap yard so I am finding out if anyone has been to any of these yards before and if so, what is the sort of stuff they have for sale.

I tried Capral aluminium, crikey I thought highway robbery went out of fashion with Ned Kelly

I am hoping not to have to drive all over town looking for the stuff I need if all the dealers just deal in crap and rubbish.

And of course if you yourself have some, let me know. ( no I dont mean just let me know, I mean let me know with the intention of selling it!!!)

GF.
The Scrappies could be your best bet. At least if you go to the yard & start looking around (kind of like a kid/dad in a lollie/toy/tool shop ) you'll prolly find some real interesting stuff you didn't think you (& the cook KNOWS you didn't) needed.
The quoted prices don't seen to be TOO bad ...

Capral employed some of the Kelly family for a while as part of the finance & marketing departments. They didn't call it robbery & capral still haven't realised ...

Does anybody know of a good scrappie or metal supplier, North of the "Mexican" boarder , in Sydney?

Jbo,
I am looking at machining up my own linear bearings for X any Y axis's. To begin with I will only do the X axis bearings and have decided that I need 2 pieces at 250 mm long ( total 500 mm). Each bearing will incorporate six 22 mm deep groove ball bearings that will run on 1 inch dia bar.

Everything looks ok on paper I just need to get it up on the mill and start taking off metal. And course the first ones will only be prototypes.

I have been looking at a website www.buildyouridea.com and liked his homemade cast linear bearings,( called HBLB homebrew linear bearings). As I have no interest (or skills) in casting, I will give it a go from solid round bar.

Ben, thanks for any helpful info in this regard.

O'brian Aluminium used to have an "offcuts" bin at their Smithfield yard. They have recently moved to 2 Blackman Crescent South Windsor NSW 2756 Phone: (02) 4587 9766 worth contacting for slab sized offcuts.
