Question Where to get a 1.5KW 3Phase Motor

    Hi Guys,

Just got a VFD for my mill and I have now learned that there is such a thing as a "single phase motor", I thought it was a three phase with a capacitor "generating" the missing phase.

Anyway, now I need to get my hands on a 1.5KW 3Phase motor. Searching ebay didn't come up with much, is there anywhere in the Brisbane area I can look? Are there any scrapyards in the area? Or does anybody have one they wouldn't mind parting with?

    Cheers,
    Alex

It may be worth a check of Motor re-winders in your area, often they have some 'surplus', make sure it is 220v rated.
Probably a 4 pole would be best as you can take it up to 120hz.

    Hi Mate,

I get all motors from a company called Mechtric is brissy. Their number is 3274 3327. Don is the guys i deal with

You just need a 1.5Kw 240/415 motor. These motors are the ones used with single to 3 phase VFD's. All these motors will quite happily run at 60hz, which gives a little extra speed.

Just remember when running the 3 phase motor from a VFD that you will have to change the motor terminal strips to the delta configuration, seen as the triangle on the back of the terminal housing cover.

Are these 2 pole or 4 pole?
The advantage with the 4 pole is you can take them up to 120hz if need be.

    Al,

I usually run a 50Hz to match Australia's frequency, but will go to 60hz for a little extra speed, so regardless whether I use a 2 or 4 or 6 pole motor the displayed output frequency will always be to a maximum of 60hz. I have never tried 120Hz for a 4 pole motor.

One other thing I do is that if the motor is to be run at a low speed/frequency for extended periods of time, I remove the stock fan and mount a separately powered 240v high volume axial fan on the back of the motor to give a constant cooling . This stop the motor overheating.

With a new installation I guess it does not make alot of difference, but if you have an existing motor that matches the rpm of just under 1500rpm of a 4 pole motor then using a 4 pole motor up to 120hz will double the old rpm.

Hi Alex, I've got a 3Ph 1.5 HP motor I bought 3 years ago to build a rotary phase converter, but bought one instead.

I'm down in Melbourne, and if'n you get real desperate you can have it for just the postage to your area.....a photo too if'n you want to see it and further specs.....email me at tarpear@iprimus.com.au

    Hi Ian,

Thank you very much for that generous offer, but I eventually found one on ebay locally.

    Thanks again,
