    Default Z controlled depth

    Good day

I have a CNC router machine
I am trying to make a 1mm deep V groove along an ACM 4mm 2400x1220 panels

I have good suction under the bed
I did a clearance area' 1mm the MDF on the bed
I use clamps to flatten the ACM ( Aluminium Composite Material ) as much as possible

I find that the cut depth along the 1200mm length is inconsistent.
It varies about 1mm along the length of the sheet.
This is critical for my application because the ACM snapped when trying to fold it.

I am wondering if I can buy any device to control Z axis. I was thinking about a floating head

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers
    Nissim

I don't know much about routers, I'm more a laser guy. But would it be feasible to place a series of similar planks on your bed to lift up your composite. Then use the router to create an accurate surface on one plank (probably time consuming, hence just one plank of a series) at the point where you need your bed precisely level. Then clamp your composite on top and machine the groove? I assume the composite has some flex that will allow it to lay flat in the desired area? Just a thought.

Edit: bugger! you have a vacuum bed. This likely wouldn't work. Note to self, don't reply before finishing morning coffee

Machine the bed flat? a straight line on that sheet I would do by hand with a router and guide

There is some software (I was looking at it a few days ago but of course can't find it again now!) which will take data from a set of probed points and correct your z zxis g-code to track out the errors. I know that some people using CNC machines for making printed circuit boards use this to improve the accuracy of track cutting.

The software might be Eagle to create the PCB layout and PCB-gcode to generate the G-Code? There is a PCB-GCODE Yahoo group.

I use a depth controller, bought it from cnc-step....works perfectly on my small router.

Found it. You need to buy/make a probe to fit on your router. The software moves the router in a grid over the surface of the material to be cut and measures irregularities in the height. You feed it your G-code and the Z-axis values get modified to track out the surface errors.
