You can't go wrong with a G540.
Only issue might be in finding a PC with a parallel port to run it.
I have a G540 on my X-Carve and a Chinese 6040,
Hello fellow Aussies
Firstly this is my first post so if l get something wrong show mercy haha
I am about to start building my first machine and although l have all the mechanical components sorted out, l am still haven't choosen the controls. So l am now asking my fellow Aussie cnc gurus to help. I am leaning towards a g540 but am still unsure.
Any help would be much appreciated. I hope with all you guys experience I will be able to make a decision.

You could check out Homann designs Peter has a good range of gear .The PC thing is easy to find there are still a heap of places selling refurbish for 20 -50 bucks I have a little P4 dell runs like a charm you can still buy Parallel cards on eebs .
Thanks fellas
I've got myself an old pc with plenty of spare parts just in case. I've checked out Homann designs and has a good range of stuff seems like the logical solution although the budget is going to stretch. Is anyone else using something different that they recommend.
Thanks again
Hi Wazza, I am using Leadshine M542 drivers on my cnc router and a converted Hafco Milling machine, been using them for about five years now and had no problems at all, I purchased the lot from Ocean Controls in Seaford, they also have break out boards as well.

Hi naijin
Thanks for your input. 👍 Are you running ocean controls 430 oz motors with 36volt supply or something different. It seems the typical voltage with the m542 is 36volts rather than 48volts with the gecko. I'm not sure that it would make much of a difference for my machine but l am would like to understand what others have already successfully used.
Wozza
Watch the voltage on the Ocean board I have seen one go bang yhey could not explain why lower voltage for sure.
Homann Designs all the way.
Yes you can maybe save a few $$ but is it worth it?
Personally I believe in cry once, buy the best you can afford, Peter has done the hard yards on the research, and from what I understand (because I never needed to) if you have an issue he's more than happy to help you out.

Those of us who get binary, and those who don't.
Hi Wozza, yes I am using the 430 Oz stepper motors, the power supply I have three and they are all 48volt, (0ne for each driver) the motors I understand can operate as low as 24 volt as long as the amperage is about 4.5 amps at the drivers end.
Nick
Thanks fellas
With three individual power supplies you are probably less likely to get voltage spikes and won't damage the drives. Its definitely a good idea. I still haven't made my mind up yet and will probably ring ocean and homann to see what information they can help me with. The simplicity of the g540 still appeals to me.
I'm running 2 x 24v power supplies for the 4 stepper drivers coupled with a power supply Multiplier with a back emf clamp works like a charm .
