Hi All,

I’m working on a metal welding bench. I want to add some 1/8” steel plate to the top but I’d like to notch the edges for a better fit. I’m also thinking of another project which will require me to remove a 1”x1” square from the center of a 1’x1’ plate. What is the best way to cut these notches/holes (best defined as cleanest/straightest but not necessarily the fastest)?

Thanks,

The cleanest/ straightest, which happens to be the fastest is water jet cutting. The notches on the edge, a hack saw and a file. The hole in the middle, a torch or plasma cutter followed up with a file.

i agree with 2muchstuff. plasma will be your best bet if you can afford it or borrow someone elses. using oxy-fuel takes a little skill to get a perfect cut.
