View Full Version : New Forum Listing Mentors & Apprentices...
jdebuck 04-01-2005, 10:25 AM If CNCadmin (Paul) would consider adding a forum that would be for listing willing mentors by their own submission and/or for apprentices looking for one for professional or hobbyist interest, via each state in the USA and other countries?
HOW WOULD YOU VOTE FOR THIS? YES (Good Idea) OR NO (Bad Idea)
As far as other countries go, I dont know how they could be listed other than maybe North, South, East, West, Central ??? (Any ideas here? email me...)
I for one, would be interested in knowing of others that are close to where I
live and share some of the same interest.
There is so much knowledge and talent on this website...10,000+ that I think that there may be other members who would like to have this info available to them too, maybe not. I have been asked to run this idea past everyone who is willing to vote and see what they thought about it.
Thanks!

jdebuck 04-01-2005, 05:36 PM CNCadmin,
WOW...that was quick response!
You are the best...and you obviously have a good sense of humor too.
THANKS!
Jeff
I voted yes and think it would help to find others to help. I have so many things (projects) that I'm working on and others could be helped with things. I have 30 years machine building experience. Hope this forum gest started.
ynneb 04-02-2005, 04:34 AM Great suggestion. I hope it works.
I have made a post in the new forum already.
You did well to get Paul to create the forum.
I have been hasling for a "Competitions and Give aways" forum for ages and had no responce. Maybe if I ask publicly I might get better results.
I recon it would be good to have all the comps together so that it was easier to find the current comps, and also view past results. Also potential comp sponsors could easily see the great reslts these comps get.
I am currently speaking with a CAD crowd about running a comp here. It is a real pain having to hunt for past links of comps to show them what the reslts were.
Oh BTW this CAD crowd ( No names mentioned yet) have never run a comp or advertising here b4, so it may be interesting to see what responce the whole thing gets. That is, if they do descide to come to the party.

ynneb,
Thank You, I hope it goes over well too!
My Kudos again to Paul for getting it done so quickly with the voting only being 9 Yes and 1 NO at the time.
I agree that it would be nice to have the comps listed under one heading...I too have to hunt & find them sometimes, even by reverting back to an automated email response for the link to make it a little quicker. I think that it would be very beneficial for the current and/or future potential sponsors/members to have quicker and easier access to these threads. More CNC Zone.com members may possibly join in them if they were easier to locate. I have seen that in the past few comps that I have participated in, that there were quite a few people that mentioned they had just heard about it. (Or was this just an excuse  )
EXPOSURE, EXPOSURE, EXPOSURE...isnt that what its all about???
Try a poll to see what others think...Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained..RIGHT!
I will personally give it a yes vote if you do poll for it!
Have a good one...

CNCadmin 04-05-2005, 11:46 AM I don't want to create a Competitions and Give away forum because that is not a main feature of the site. Also depending on the contest, it's ether located in the club house or in the forum of the sponsor of the give-away. I also run a banner and email everyone to make the members aware of it. I like your suggestions, so keep them coming, but I have to pass on that request. The reason for some of the give-aways is to place a focus on the sponsor(s) and to get a great product in the hands of a CNCzone member(s). If I were doing a contest every month and it became a regular thing that I will add that forum.
BTW, manythings don't need a vote, you just have to ASK. :)

No it is not the main feature of the site, but is merely a topc just like "Steam engines"
and 'wood routers" etc, are not the main topics either but go to making the whole picture.
I would have thought that judging by the responces to competitions, that it certainly was an interest in the CNC world. After all, the products it advertises / promotes, are all CNC related.
If I were doing a contest every month and it became a regular thing that I will add that forum. Well you know my plans. Also we have at least two more comps in the pipelines now already. I have little doubt that there will be more after that too.
The reason for some of the give-aways is to place a focus on the sponsor(s) and to get a great product in the hands of a CNCzone member(s). I think what you are saying is that you want the giveaways to be in the same forum as the sponsor. I can accept that. But I think the competitions held collectivly together does not detract from the sponors, and show all the good time sponsors in the one basket. That in itself is a good add too.
Ok so now I come to the begging part. PLEASE :)
BTW, many things don't need a vote, you just have to ASK.
We both know where the statement "you have not, because you ask not" comes from.
I am asking.
CNCadmin 04-06-2005, 12:52 AM OK here you go- http://www.cnczone.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=160 better than nothing.
ynneb 04-06-2005, 04:38 AM Dont think me ungreatful.
But ill settle for nothing instead.

Well OK...... that is a great place as all the post get placed on the main page for the site.
ynneb 04-07-2005, 03:09 AM Well OK...... that is a great place as all the post get placed on the main page for the site.
Take a look at the amounts of visits to the last 10 posts in this section, and the amount of responces. No one goes there. You would expect with 10,000 members there should be more visits than that.
We all know that most use the daily posts button, more than the main page.
JavaDog 04-07-2005, 06:26 PM I have to agree with Benny there...my Firefox link for CNC takes me directly to the forum page (bypassing the front page). Not for any real reason...just that I usually go right to the forums anyways.
I voted YES. You don't see the Master/Apprentice setup used all that often anymore (I know Butchers still do Apprenticeships). Which is too bad, because I think working with someone as an Apprentice is more valuable than college classes (though, they obviously have their place) and the like.
traveler 04-08-2005, 06:42 PM I think it would be a great idea to have a forum that would match masters and apprentices. Personally I have quite a lot of experience with my plasma table but know nothing about setting up my mill to operate under CNC control. I would love help in that area. I'm in the north central Missouri area, anyone care to share info with me?

High Seas 04-12-2005, 01:00 AM Real good idea! Could the mentors be listed by area(s) of expertise, ie metal working, milling, jewelry, mold making, etc - kinda like the forums? Jim

Jim,
I think that CNCadmin was gracious enough to help us get this far...although the idea you have is a good one, it would probably be a moderation nightmare. The idea of this forum is to just locate others in your area with similar interest, the individual topic forums you mentioned by category are already there and should be specific to that topic only. IE: If you posted a similar thread like this within one of those forums, it would surely get lost & buried eventually deep within the pages and not as easily accessible as this.
http://www.cnczone.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=267
Just try posting a new thread listed with "New Zealand" as the title in the Mentors & Apprentices Locator Forum if you havent already, and list all of your experience, interest and expertise within it and others in your area will be able to locate & contact you.
Hopefully, this forum will expand the ability for you and others to obtain firsthand, some knowledge in areas that you/they may not have ventured into without having a local mentor to help them succeed.
Jeff

I could BUT if members make their posts detailed, you would just have to do a search in the forum and you will be able to find all the areas of expertise your looking for. Don't forget about this search aswell- http://www.cnczone.com/forums/search.php?
jdebuck 04-12-2005, 10:14 AM Paul, Could you please move the above post to the Mentors & Apprentices Locator forum / Missouri and then delete these from the poll...Thanks! Jeff
Thank You!

Dag-50,
Why haven't you started a thread for your area yet?

Just curious...

I just checked and you haven't started a thread in the Mentors and Apprentices Locator either...How come?
By the way...Thanks for the YES vote!

I actually missed that link. Thanks.
EDIT: Done and posted!
turmite 04-12-2005, 01:29 PM I voted yes but can also understand the no votes. Offering to help someone learn this trade or these trades can be both positive and negative. For the mentors....remember you were once in their shoes. For the apprentices, or would that be apprentici?, remember that, those that offer their time to help you, have other things to do in life...in other words...be a welcome guest!

Mike,
Very well put...I am a licensed falconer and the only way to get into this sport is by apprenticeship. Some apprentices can become really overbearing if this is not discussed and agreed to up front. I also think that for the most part, experienced people/Mentors know this from how they were themselves just as you stated.
Thanks for the YES vote...Have U listed yourself in that forum yet?
Jeff
Dag-50 04-12-2005, 03:08 PM Hello Jdebuk,

berin 05-18-2005, 09:56 AM I vote yes, but my fear on this is really only based on people who are looking for aid that is more like a do it for me. Rather then a learn on your own with a bit of helpful guidence, and there for learning what is right and worng how and why. Brake is over back to work yay.
