Hey folks,
My interest in this Forum was sparked by a work colleague of mine named Cameron. Cameron is amazing with what he can do and does. He "seriously dabbles" in alternative energy and some of the solutions he comes up with are nothing short of spectacular.
Wheras, my ambitons are a little different; I wish to construct a laser powered balsa cutter and I am told that this is the place. I welcome any ideas, directions or advice in this matter. My son and I are serious builders of free flight models and have fallen in love with laser cutting.
Looking forward to enjoying being a part of this forum,
Best regards,
Maurice (Kvar)

welcome Maurice & Son,

laser cutting and engraving machines can be had from china at about 4000USD.capable of slicing balsa.Itake it You are aware of the fact that balsa ges burned not cut in he process?
In any case if and when You do get a laser going.. make sure You have all th safety procedures in place.
Good luck and hope to see photos of Your work soon.

I have a 50W laser and I have cut 8mm thick balsa a few times. If you use proper speed and power it can be done without burning. It's softwood and it's very easy to cut with a laser. Actually you can cut 8mm thick balsa faster that 3mm thick MDF.
I wish I could cut 12mm thick pine with the same speed as balsa. Although pine and balsa both have the same speed and power settings on my VersaLaser machine they are completely different.
