View Full Version : Pulling the trigger PM45M Mill and PM1127V Lathe
jfseaman 05-18-2009, 10:13 AM After not having any machining since 2005, I am finally ordering.
Much hemming and hawwing but it came down features and shipping.
I was going to go all Grizzly but I would have had to start adding things to get to the feature set of the PM45M and the PM1127V seems just a little bigger than the Grizzly 11 x 26. The PM1127V spindle bore is 1/16 bigger as well.
So going by the advise on the forum, get the biggest you can fit into your shop and afford the PM45M and PM1127V seem to meet those criteria.
I know Lathemaster sells the same machine (or close) for less but then I have to add shipping, a stand, no coolant system, no tooling.
I will be converting these to CNC but it won't be for quite awhile (1 year perhaps). These machines are initially going strait to storage while my Garage/Shop is being built (not even started yet). I believe the price will only go up for all the possible machines and if not shipping will so I'm pulling the trigger now.
I'll post on how the order process, shipping and delivery go.
idtkid 05-18-2009, 07:15 PM Exciting! Those machines look great. Can I ask where you bought them and for how much?
pete from TN 05-18-2009, 08:22 PM if it is anything like my Lathemaster machine I am quite sure you will enjoy it. I am about nuts trying to get my cnc conversion done on my machine. Cannot wait!!! Also check out my thread on the belt drive conversion I am doing on it... These machines are just large enough to do some decent machining and just small enough to be able to move around if necessary and are manageable with an engine crane. Make sure you get some pics of it when it arrives and post em' for us to see... Good luck with it...peace

I hope I'm getting my machines from www.machinetoolonline.com
idtkid 05-18-2009, 10:20 PM Are you from Pittsburgh? Me and Hoss are that I know of.

California.
idtkid 05-19-2009, 10:04 AM Ahh gotcha, that shop is just a distributor is just a few miles from me.
jfseaman 05-19-2009, 10:29 AM The only retail close to me is HF.Ahh gotcha, that shop is just a distributor is just a few miles from me.
jfseaman 05-19-2009, 11:40 AM I just spoke with the owner of Quality Machine Tools (http://www.machinetoolonline.com).
I believe we've worked out enough details to finalize an order.
The PM1127V lathe is in stock but but the PM45M mill is on the boat. He said trouble with those on the boat is that they are all sold but there is another order coming after that. I said I can wait.
So I think we are all set.
Features and tooling per website. Free shipping, lift gate to my storage included.
I'll get it from storage to the house once the Garage/Shop is built.
I'm getting them now before the garage is ready because:
- They are as big as I can possibly fit in my garage (as planned the garage is as big as I can make it)
- These machines configured per the website have all the feature I want until converted to CNC. Stands included and for the mill coolant included, collet set and a vise.
- The price is right. With the features and free shipping, I don't think I can do better without hassle. The price will only go up and loss of free shipping when the economy turns around.
- The design details of the PM45M is closer to the Lathemaster or IH than Grizzly or MTW (MD002). A full IH size won't fit as I plan on making a 4' x 4' (or larger) router table.
- The spindle bore of the PM1127V is bigger than the other lathes in the 11x26 class.
Away we go.
Teyber12 05-19-2009, 06:10 PM California.
where in cali if you dont mind me asking :)
Thazul 05-19-2009, 07:50 PM I have that lathe, and they list 1-1/16" Bore, but mine doesn't quite measure that big.
If I remember correctly, its just a couple thou bigger than 1".
I think it might be just big enough for 1" stock, I haven't tried yet though.
I can check if you would like.
The free shipping has been that way as long as I can remember.
I bought mine in middle of 2007, I think it was one of the first models with the digital readout for rpms.
Couple things to be ready for is getting either the mini fuses on hand that it uses(pain to get locally if not impossible)
Or just get a whole new fuse holder and regular fuses.
Me and the other guy here on the zone that I know has one both had problems with the fuses/fuse holder.
Also, recently the magnetic switch stopped working, I got a replacement that's not quite the same but works from Grizzly.
And maybe consider a QCTP that's ready to go from them if you don't feel like doing some modifying.
Get the cleanin' rags ready, and don't forget to order yourself some way oil.
G'luck, & don't forget to post pics when you get it! :)
Best Regards,
Andy
jfseaman 05-20-2009, 01:47 AM where in cali if you dont mind me asking :)
Central California coast.
jfseaman 05-21-2009, 04:28 PM Well the check went out in the mail today.
6 weeks or more.
Kipper 05-21-2009, 06:28 PM I don't believe it! we actually get something cheaper in the UK :yay: makes a bleedin change :D
Have fun with it when it gets off the boat matey
jfseaman 10-13-2009, 10:30 AM The mill and lathe should be on their way today!
Quality Machine Tools has been fantastic to deal with.
Even though it seems like a long delay since I ordered, it was my preference to wait. It really worked out for me because since I ordered things have changed at home for the good. I now have a garage to use as a shop.
I was very pleased when I got notice that the mill shipment had arrived but even more pleased when they said we will be ready to ship after we clean them up and check them.
Tracking number later in the day.
Now I have to decide how to move the machines around. It will be delivered with a lift gate truck but once at home I will need to move it.
Is a good engine lift and appropriate choice? Suggestions where go obtain.
Rent or buy?
Has anyone rented a garage sized fork truck to move theirs?
or
Should I get an engine lift anyway for break down and CNC conversion?
jfseaman 10-20-2009, 02:46 PM Tracking number shows that they are more than half way here.
I'd be really excited except for other problems in my life.
jfseaman 10-29-2009, 02:56 PM The shipping company 'miss placed' a RF45 clone, stand, coolant pump and various other bits. Around 1000 pounds crated and on a pallet.
Of course I'm also worried about the lathe sitting in some warehouse getting hit with fork trucks and getting damaged.
They will find it eventually.
jfseaman 11-03-2009, 07:24 PM The toy truck came today.:)
The PM 45 Mill:
There was some damage to the shipping crate for the mill that went missing for 2 weeks. This is the fault of the shipping company and in no way reflects on Quality Machine Tool http://www.machinetoolonline.com/index.html. I've been very happy with them.

But the shipping company did put the crates in the garage.

There is one important part definitely missing - one of the quill handles. There don't seem to be any screws for the X or Y handles and I expected some package of miscellaneous screws but only had a box with an R8 - J22? adapter for the drill chuck, an R8 shell adapter and a 22 mm wrench. There one one small set screw floating around in the base of the crate.
The stand has some bending at the bottom but I'm sure that will be just fine. There are no screws for the coolant pump assembly where it will go into the tank. Again I believe that it is missing from the broken shipping crate.
The mill was securely bolted to the base of the shipping crate. These are the bolts that will hold the mill to the stand, they are bent and won't be usable.
Of course, I haven't read the destructions yet to see if the missing screws are in the BOM and of course I left them at the other house so more on that later after I go back and get them.

I received a 6" vise instead of a 4". This thing is a monster.
The PM 1127 Lathe:
Absolutely beautifully crated. No damage, no missing parts. Nothing bent or even appearing to have scuffed paint.
9265492655
All in all, I'm pleased. I'm sure the missing handle will be resolved and any missing screws dealt with.
Oh, it's a bit bigger than I expected and much larger than my Sherline.
pete from TN 11-03-2009, 08:09 PM Lookin' real good there.... that sherline will probably become a dust collector once you see that RF45 in action, glad you finally got them and that they arrived relatively unscathed. Now the journey begins!!! enjoy it man...peace

Thanks.
The Sherline was gone in 2005 before I moved to England.
BTW: No missing bag of screws. Just the quill handle, need 3 but only had 2. It seems to have been removed to fit the vise in the crate but must have fallen out. I'll call Quality Machine Tools tomorrow to see what they want to do.
Next task: siting them in the garage and leveling concrete and 220v power for the mill.
jfseaman 11-04-2009, 01:24 PM Double checked, only the handle missing.
Called Quality Machine Tools, Matt will send me a replacement handle. Not worth filing a claim. I'll need some tooling so I'll get it from him then.
Aside from siting and power, the big thing keeping me from jumping on clean up and assembly is a chronic headache. Went off coffee about a week and a half ago and have had a low grade headache ever since. Today is pretty high grade.
