anyone know how to pull a surface vector/normal into a post for compensation directions w/ a 5-axis machine?

Post Builder should be able to give you the information. In surface contouring, if you turn on contact output, you will get the
surface normals in the tool path for the post to use in 3D cutcom. Look at
the custom command
pb_cmd_three_dimensional_tool_offset.tcl for a Fanuc example.
