Yes, PID contol general purpose control algorithm. Servo control systems use PI,PID (+feedforward) ... If your servo actuator has fast responce (like this Brushless or brush type DC motor)you need PID control or developed control algorithms.

If you want to use stepper motor for servo actuator and you dont need high speed operation you can use simple control without PID.
