Yeah... The control pendant is pretty nice, the control box atleast USED to contain Gecko drivers, the motor plugs are nice, encodor plugs suck and if anything goes wrong, don't expect any customer service that's worth a ****.

I would say build your own. Get a break-out board, a power supply, 3 Gecko drivers, 3 steppers or servo's, Mach3 software, some wire and cables, a project box from RadioShack or HomeDepot and save $500 and a headache.

it is a nice looking product and i'm sure its done well but that is a large mark up for a box and a fancy video game type of joystick
if your considering the cost to build a quailty setup yourself ,you would save well over a $1000

^^^ Dertsap is right. And the "software" it comes with is only trial versions. You can get the trial version of Mach right from thier website. I think the only cripple is it will only run up to 1000 lines of code, but either way, you still have to spend something like $180 on a licenese, good stuff though.

And the control pendant is a USB port "emulated keyboard", that should give you enough info to get on google and find something that will do the same thing for $20.

for about 200 you can get a nice handwheel setup for jogging , or keep an eye on ebay for an encoder and make one , i made my own for my setup ,and it was simple enough to do , its hard to beat the feel and control of a handwheel its well above the joystick

so somebody give me links and list to exactly what i need if you dont mind i am going in circles here i dont care about the pendant i just need to get this machine up in 3 weeks -i have a 24k job that has come early 9 months early due to a lazy machine shop on the west coast i was going to replace most of the componets with mach motion within 9 months
and won a bid for the "the next time around"
this mill has electrical enclosure and metal brackets for motors

the table is 9x49 ball screws variable head #30 taper
im all for saving money

What machine do you have? And I would be more worried about automating the quill, it's time consuming to make your own quill retro, expensive to buy, $1800 range? Google Elrod Machine, he probably makes some of the best stuff, but it's not cheap.

What about this

I like it, but it's not going to be as precision as a ballscrew driven quill. Can't compare the accuracy of a spur gear to a ball screw, like apples and oranges. But will probably be fairley repeatable, and depending on how accurate your Z axis needs to be, might be pleanty suitable. Definatly cheaper, thats for sure!
