I'm drowning here, w/ a stupid problem I can't figure out. NX6.1.something. I change my customer defaults for drafting, close NX reopen, check the defaults (yes they are changed), go into drafting & it is still using the stock settings. Look at the preferences & they are set to stock. I thought customer defaults would override the preferences. Where am I going wrong?

You only use the new customer defaults when you start a new part. If you want to use the new settings, for instance annotation: go to preferences>annotation and press "load all defaults". It is not possible to read in all customer defaults whith one command.
