All,

I am considering purchasing a mill with the intent to convert to a 3-axis CNC mill. The Sieg X3, Grizzly G0463, and Harbor Freight 93885 all seem to be identical.

Does anybody have any preferences about which machine to buy? Why?

Thanks,
Neal

If the specs on the HF mill are still correct then it's the older X3 with the shorter table and column so it will have less travel in X and Z along with less clearance in Z. I would go with Grizzly over HF for machine tools just because the fit and finish is generally better with Grizzly.

I have to agree that the Grizzly machines have a better fit and finish than the the HF one. You're much more likely to run into a knowledgeable sales person at Grizzly too. Given the choice between teh two I would always choose Grizzly. We have a large Grizzly distribution center, and HF store, down in Springfield MO. I always have to stop in both places when I'm in town.

In this size/price range you might also want to take a look at the CNC ready Taig mill. It has the advantage of being ready to mount your steppers to and go: http://soigeneris.com/buy/Taig/Mill/Micro_Mill_factory_assembled__509119.aspx

If you are going X3, the Grizzly one year warranty with parts support VS the HF 90 day drag-the-400-pound-mill-back-for-a-complete-replacement makes it a no brainer. If you can use a smaller mill, the Taig, coupled with the G540, is the best bang for the buck.
