View Full Version : Need Help! Mori Seiki Lathe Sl 3A
rajuicnc 12-19-2008, 10:34 PM Hello,
I am a new member to this community,
Regards and good wishes to all,
Recently I purchased an Old Mori Seiki Lathe with Fanuc 6ta control
which has only LED single line diaplay and no CRT,
The Machine is working fine, the problem is entering program manually
which takes lot of time, hence I need help interface the machine with
pc for rs232 communication. The machine has one blue honda type
connector with 20 pins, i dont have any manuals. how to convert this
port to rs232 and also what are the parameters and settings to be made
for transferring programs from PC to machine.
Hope I will get a reply ASAP,
Best Regards,

JohnnyTurn 12-21-2008, 02:25 PM You need to get a BTR. (Behind the tape reader)
I believe your machine in Pre RS-232. So there is no "conversion" to RS-232
A BTR will trick the tape reader into thinking it's receiving punched paper tape when it is receiving binary code from the PC.
In other words: The PC sends out Binary code (1001001), The BTR converts the binary code to a paper punched signal. The control accepts the code.
Some BTR's only SEND and do not receive programs back to the PC. That's OK though because editing on the older controls is not userfriendly. You just have to do you editing/debugging on the PC and send the program back o the control when you are done.
My Old SL3B has the YASNAC 2000G control. This setup works well.
It is not easy to get it set up. You MUST have a BTR that will work with the FANUC 6. You must have the SPECIAL WIRED CABLE. An off the shelf cable will not work. And you need the communication software for the PC to interface with the control.
Google "BTR for fanuc 6" To find some of the companies that make the package I have discussed. It's not cheap. I had my local retired Mori tech make me the BTR board and sell me his software to get passed this problem.
If you want his info I can give it to you.

cncdiag 12-22-2008, 06:58 PM The 6A does have RS232 capability it was an option.
What series software do you have?
rajuicnc 12-26-2008, 12:00 AM Hello,
I came to know that there is a posibility to convert into rs232 by little
modification and setting.
I need the details for converting the ASR/facit port to rs232 and also
what are all the parameters to be changed for interfacing PC.
I am having WINPICIN and CIMCOEDIT software for communicating with other
machines, but no idea to which series these softwares belongs to.
Awaiting your reply at the earliest,

cncdiag 12-31-2008, 09:16 AM The cable you make up plugs into CSR on the puncher board.
Forgot to put that in the procedure
Freda Tesseneer 12-31-2008, 01:23 PM Thanks to all who posted the information about the Mori Seiki. I have this machine to setup also. We will be working on it on January 5. I may be posting some questions myself!

Can you please give the details to convert DB 25 Fpin M/C sideto DB 9 pin M PC side,
I have Cimcoedit software for communicating with other machines, can this
same software holds good for fanuc 6T A,

WGoyer 01-01-2009, 11:01 AM Rajuc,
This will work:
Fanuc 25 Pin Female Laptop 9 Pin Male

I'm not sure it is obvious, but 4 and 5 are jumpered. Also, 6,8, and 20 are jumpered together.

tilderdine 03-05-2009, 11:34 AM Hey johnny turn. I noticed you are running your yasnac 2000g from your computer. Are you plugging into the 25 pin tape reader plug on the back of your machine? If so where do you get that cable? Is it usb on one end and 25 pin on the other? Also do you need a special program to send from your computer. I know we have to send from an old dos laptop on some of machines. What is the process to get it into your machine? I know its a lot of info but I appreciate anything you cal tell me. thanks
JohnnyTurn 03-05-2009, 03:20 PM tilderdine,
It's just too much for me right now to tell you all that's needed to do this setup.
However,
Gordon Brown @ Summit Computer is the main man when it comes to the old Mori Seiki.
You must tell him that John from J.P. Precision Machine Co. referred you to him. He can make you the custom BTR board and supply you with all the software, cabling, parameters and support you will need. He is the best of the best and he is very reasonable.
Please don't call him if you are not serious or want everything for a nickel.

DanilGrip 03-05-2009, 03:37 PM Our Mori Seiki has Rs-232 Current loop. What do I need to connect this to a pc?
You need current-loop to RS-232C convertor. It will cost about 40-60 euro.
Wich voltage have Your current loop? 12? 24?
andyhol 11-18-2009, 12:30 PM Okay, I have done the conversion to rs232, I can read from the machine but I can send to the machine, I have checked the pinout twice, I am using a converter to go from 25 pin to 9 pin and I have a 9 pin null in line. I am using predator for the dnc is there any special settings I need to set in predator or is there any special setting that I need to set to let the machine know that the info is coming from rs232 not the tape?
Thanks
Andy
DanilGrip 11-18-2009, 01:30 PM try use Xon Xoff for transmition control. Disable hardware handshake from machine side (play with parameters, but be carefull... better download machine parameters in you PC). Check recive parameters on machine side....

Danil

I am not seeing anything about a receive pram or xon/xoff in the machine do you know what pram that is, remember that this is the machine that only has 160 prams or so
What software have people used with this system for dnc?
Andy
DanilGrip 11-18-2009, 02:41 PM If you have parameters manual for your machine you will find info about communication parameters. If not try "dnc-precision" (free). This soft support many NC controls.

Danil;
andyhol 11-18-2009, 03:14 PM I just loaded up pc-dnc and set the settings the way that is told in Dans word doc and again it downloads files to the PC but not from the PC. It says that it waiting for X0n and just sits there. Is XOn hardware or software? Could this still be a cable problem? It seams like it is still trying to send it to the tape, is there something I have to do to tell to send it to rs232 instead of the tape?
I will look again at the parameters to see if I can find anything. On the doc files mentioned in this thread it says on part 4 settings page "Input Device = 1" Is this something I need to change? if so how or where?
thanks
Andy
andyhol 11-18-2009, 03:41 PM Sorry, noticed that in this page http://www.kfasllc.com/rs232_6.htm it shows that the b version needs some settings changed, I changed these on what I believe to be the A version and it has helped, but not there yet. The DNC software now sees the machine, yaaa; but the machine doesn't seem to read long enough to get the whole program. I can take out the % sign and the machine will give an error telling me that the program number is not found but the dnc always shows to be stopped in mid progress, I see the "edit" text flash up on the screen then it goes away and the dnc progress stops
Any ideas?
Andy
andyhol 11-18-2009, 03:52 PM I think I have it, yaaa! In the PC-dnc io setting you can use xon xoff you have to set it for RTS/CTS and I think you have to be in the program screen when you load in the file.
Hope This helps someone else
Andy
