I hate the hassle of buying stuff in the US only to anxiously wait to see what kind of raping I'm going to get with the shipping, taxes, brokerage etc. Would anyone know of a supplier where I can purchase items like VFDs, servo drivers, power supplies etc, in Canada?
Thanks for any replies. Dan

Most Electrical suppliers carry at least one make of VFD.
ElectroMate carry motion control products.
Electrosonic have power supplies and electronic components.

I'm located in Newcastle Ontario. About 1 hour east of Toronto. I don't mind mail ordering, as long as it's in Canada. Thanks

Try Brafasco they ordered multi start rod for me from the US...

It has also been suggested to try Canadian Bearing for Multi Start Acme Rods

Fastenall can also get multi start rod

Thanks Paul, I tried Canadian bearings and fastenall, they did,nt even know what I was talking about, I did get a quote from one place, $1000,00 for 18 ft, no thanks. have not tried brasfasco but I got some from Roton. I just do not understand why it can not be made here. Graham

Most don't know what Multi start is. Brafasco ordered the rod I wanted from McMaster-Carr. If you really want multi start and have a part # from McMaster give it to Brafasco and get a quote. I did however pay $$$. So don't expect a deal. LOL

You might want to consider calling Electrozad Electric Supply in Windsor, ON.
I believe they may be able to help you out.
Do try hard to find in Canada - brokerage fees alone will kill you.
Sometimes you won't find out about the brokerage fees for a month or two after you have received the item if shipped by FedEx or UPS. I have found out the hard way.

UPS charges you RIGHT AWAY!

Fedex uses FedExTrade Networks (They will mail you later)

If you find in the US if they will ship USPS you will be ok.

Remember customs WILL NOT CHARGE YOU IF UNDER 100CAD.
Fedex also charges you TAX & DUTY if under 100CAD, UPS does not.
If you use USPS and it's under 100CAD canada post WILL NOT CHARGE YOU TAXES OR BROKERAGE
I paid 8.00 CAD brokerage from Canada post for orders over 100CAD

You are correct Paul - FedEx sends the surprise later! I don't know how they calculated it, but I had a $34 charge on a $59 order which included$9.50 in GST, $23.50 brokerage - ouch!
UPS charges right away but I once had a $70 bill for a $35 order which included exchange, taxes, duties, brokerage & admin fees.
Lesson learned.
USPS is the way to go - but it can also get flagged for extra charges at times although not very often.

Am I glad that I live on the border in Niagara Falls.
I have a US shipping address and I bring everything over myself.
$3.25 and a few dollars for PST/GST, thats it.

there's atlas-machinery.com, they carry sherline stuff and parts at very competitve prices; the store is downtown toronto on queen street. they used to have the big gorillia on the sidewalk in front of their shop.

I always clear my own, Can Customs told me it was anything under CAN$20.00.
Unless it changed withing the last month or so?
US citizens used to have $200. n/c limit before they pay duties.

I certainly agree with you fellows re Fedex and UPS charges. I have found that the best way to get the message across is to decline delivery. The supplier either ships by USPS or refunds your money. If Fedex or UPS later send you a bill, just return it saying no delivery, no pay. dedhubbs

Hey dedhubbs , good luck on that one, if you don't pay it goes on your credit report. they have you no matter what. Graham

the way around the high UPS and FedEx charges is to get a brokerage account with UPS.....it's easy to sign up online.

The majority of the cost is for brokerage is the account setup

Sure and then you end up with yet another seller who won't ship outside the US...
