View Full Version : Machine Shop Training Videos
hoss2006 10-04-2008, 09:15 PM Found a link at homeshopmachinist.net to these videos from MIT (http://techtv.mit.edu/file/743/) that cover a lot of the basics
from Layout, Setup, Saws, Lathes and Milling Machines.
They are 10 approx 45 min. long videos that should help those new to machining get a great free education.
Enjoy!

Thazul 10-04-2008, 10:08 PM Thanks Hoss! I hadn't stumbled across this yet.
I know what I'll be doing for the rest of the weekend now :)
To share a bit more, I just found out yesterday, MIT launched a free online education called Open Courseware.
I'm not sure how long this has been available, but here it is - http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/home/home/index.htm
I have not been able to stop reading since I found it.
Enjoy.

SScnc 10-05-2008, 03:56 PM Thanks Hoss, Those were very interesting. I watched all 10 and while it's nice to see that I have been doing some of the same procedures as the instructor, I definitely learned several things.
For instance, I never thought about 2 sided tape in special situations and the best part for me was threading on the lathe. I've done threading on my HF 9x20 but I never really understood the use of the half nut dial, nor did I know about setting the compound to 30 degrees, ETC.
Thanks again, I really enjoy learning all I can about machining and those were great,
Steve

keith_k98 10-09-2008, 02:59 PM Thanks Hoss,
I'm just getting into the machining process and this info is great!
In fact it, it is because of Hoss's videos that I have went out and bought an x2 & a 7x10 mini lathe just to learn. hopefully within a year would like to add CNC to the mix. If anyone has any other videos such as these please post them. Thanks all!
junkxp 10-14-2008, 04:38 AM Thanks
Learned a bit and drooled over the tooling. Now if i just had the money to get a mill i could try some of it.
Harryman 10-14-2008, 10:09 AM These are great, a good find. Thanks.
hoss2006 10-14-2008, 02:04 PM You can download the videos directly as .wmv to your hard drive with the following links.
Big files though, they vary from 75 - 166 Megs.

BrendaEM 10-14-2008, 05:57 PM A great find!
Thanks for the download links.
Also, MIT has a lot of other opencourseware such as physics that are available free from itunesU.
LUCKY13 10-15-2008, 04:18 AM Thanks Hoss.
The first day you posted these I set and watched from the beginning of first vid, to end of last.
Its funny sometimes how just even the little things you learn from something like this can help so much.
I will have to admite, like some others have meantioned, I would love ot have that selection of tools at my home shop. You couldnt even hardly hear the Monarch lathe running when he was using it. I hope to put one of those in my shop one day, or even a nice Hardinge. Heck a nice Southbend would even be great to me. A friend of mine has a new 13-40 gunsmithing imported lathe. Its a very nice lathe and works great. But he has a 11" Rockwell/Delta right beside it that you could not trade me two of the newer lathes for. That old WWII area stuff just runs like a machine should.

tikka308 10-16-2008, 05:41 PM If anyone has firefox, you can use the "downthemall" plugin to download all of these at once without having to click each one. Available at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201. No affiliation, just a happy user.
hoss2006 10-27-2008, 04:00 PM Just stumbled on this gem searching for some Gcode.
Almost 500 pages of programming goodness (if purchased)
It's a limited preview (highlighted text in table of contents) but about half of it is free to view.
CNC Programming Handbook
By Peter Smid (http://books.google.com/books?id=JNnQ8r5merMC&pg=PA151&lpg=PA151&dq=gcode+to+send+single+axis+to+home+position&source=web&ots=PXOFJO3NsP&sig=w0YAYfElgh1l-k2OS4ImTEz5m_Y&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result#PPP1,M1)

fretsman 10-28-2008, 04:54 PM It is indeed a very good book but there's a newer addition out so you may want to look at that instead- :)

hoss2006 10-29-2008, 04:02 AM Yes, but is half of it free to view? I'm a cheap S.O.B.:p:)
hoss2006 10-30-2008, 04:00 AM The MIT videos don't all seem to be available as .wmv anymore either but you can download them as .flv.

tikka308 11-02-2008, 01:36 PM I use a free website tool called zamzar (www.zamzar.com) which will convert these .flv's to your preferred type (e.g. mpg, wmv) for permanent keeping. very useful!
cjdavis618 11-07-2008, 12:02 PM Since we are talking videos:
Another great site to learn the basics of lathe work is here at http://www.wswells.com/video/index.html
These are on the old South Bend lathes, but the fundamentals are still good, even for the Mill work as far as setup and measuring etc.
alexccmeister 11-07-2008, 05:59 PM Another brilliant find. Thanks.
