View Full Version : Quick release tail stock on 8x12 lathe balsaman 10-11-2004, 02:28 PM I modified my tail stock for quick release, being tired of cranking that big bolt all the time. Here it is completed. balsaman 10-11-2004, 02:29 PM I had to drill a 1/2" hole in the tail stock. balsaman 10-11-2004, 02:31 PM I made a new bolt from 3/8" treaded rod. I welded a nut to the end and drilled it out to 3/8". I made a new nut for the bottom too. balsaman 10-11-2004, 02:33 PM I took a chunk of 1/2" steel round stock, turned it in my 4 jaw and make a 3/8" "cam". I then put it back in my 3 jaw and turned the end down to 1/4". I drilled and tapped the end for 4/40 for a retaining screw. In the picture there is a spacer and a 1.5" round peice that the handle screws into. balsaman 10-11-2004, 02:38 PM I made an aluminum block with a 1/4" hole to support the unsupported end. A bolt keeps it all together. When I get my milling machine, I will mill a flat spot on the tail stock casting so the block will sit flat and look more profesional. balsaman 10-11-2004, 02:40 PM The drilled out nut on the bolt sits on the cam. Moving the handle about 45 degrees changes things from loose to tight. Works great. rob2424 10-12-2004, 04:53 AM what is the make and model of your lathe? balsaman 10-12-2004, 06:14 AM Harbor Freight 8x12 Ken_Shea 10-12-2004, 07:40 AM Excellent Balsaman !! JFettig 10-12-2004, 07:41 AM I sure wish my tailstock on my 7x12 was that wide so it wouldnt tip when I try to slide it. I was trying to sceme up an idea to make it wider:p That definately looks very nice. one thing I have wanted to put on mine is a crank on the end of the leadscrew *hint* *hint*;) Jon |
