Hey Guys

7.5 inch per minute (top travel speed of machine)

38 min. total time a very noisy 38 min.

I would like to know if any buddy can tell me where I would start looking for plans on making my own cnc router. This sounds very interesting and have been enjoying listening to all you guys talk about this. I would be very greatful if someone would give me an idea where to start looking.

The easiest way is just to do a google search, since there are a number of plans (and design concepts) on the net.

One of the simplest designs uses an MDF framework, with black iron gas pipe and rollerblade skate bearings as linear rails and bearings. Plans for this style are published by a man named John Kleinbauer (AKA Cranky) on his site, http://www.crankorgan.com. Sadly, his construction forum was recently made private, so you can't just go there and get ideas, anymore.

Many people on this forum have built his machines, or something heavily inspired by his machines. (CNC Parrot is someone who built a machine by looking at pictures on the net, and "parroting" or copying what he saw)

There are also many other people who have published designs for CNC wood routers, but Cranky's seem to focus on home woodworking, and just making something that works from parts largely available at Home Depot.

For increased accuracy you will want to use more rigid construction, and higher precision parts -- there is something called a ballscrew and ballnut which is a super-precision screw drive. The nut is actually a helical ball bearing that threads onto the special screw thread. Very cool, extremely precise, and hideously expensive for a homebuilder.

Just hang around this forum for a week or two -- I went from complete novice to stripping down printers for their stepper motors, in just about a week. I'm gathering up parts to build my first machine, right now...just got the iron pipe for my rails, Saturday, from Home Depot's scrap bin. I love free stuff!

A machine for woodcutting is relatively simple to build -- milling needs more precision, and consequently more rigidity, more cost, etc. And, it's a significantly different task to build a machine with an active table 5 inches square, than it is to build one to accept 4x8 foot sheet goods.

So, what do you want to build? Or, more precisely, what do you want to do with it?

I bought both of these plans just to study them and they both seem very complete. MachineToolCamp has a very detailed step by step manual if you are looking for more than just plans.

What did you do for bearings? Linears running on the pipe or am I not seeing the rails??

I took advantage of J.C.K's hard work. They are rollerblade bearings running on gas pipe. Very affordable!

Oh and someone asked what controller

Fet3/crusier package from stepper world

I've got to figure a way to get more speed from this sytem.

Still not shure exactly how big my cutting area is.

I was shooting for 2' x 4'

It takes so long to move around at 7.5 ipm I havn't tested/used the whole area yet.

One way to get more speed is to use higher voltage and different resistors. Another is lead screws with less pitch. I use the FET3 and get 40+ inches per minute on 1/2-10 acme rod and 27 volts.

What pitch screws? What voltage motors? What voltage powersupply?

Another way to get more speed is a chopper controller such as the xylotec.

I'm using the stock Fet3/cruiser setup

4.5 v motors
12v power supply
1/2" - 13 threads per inch "lead screw" (hardwarestore threaded rod)

Joe, I'm using 4v motors right now. when I was running them on 12v the best speed that I could get was about 20" per minute using 5/16 18tpi threaded rod. With the same controller/motor setup and bumping a 24v power supply i can jog at over 40" per minute now. With 1/2 10 turn acme rod I could probably get as high as 60" - 70"

Seems like I read somewhere (Maybe Camtronics' site.. I dunno) that best motor performance is with a minimum of 4x the motors spec'd voltage.

FWIW I was really impressed at what upgrading the power supply did for me.

Are those Nema 34 motors? If so they can also be part of the problem. Nema 23 are a little faster generally.

Here is a shot of the rollerblade bearings on gas pipe. First introduced by J.C.K. The shot doesn't show it but there is another bearing at 90 degress to each of these.http://www.members.shaw.ca/dgray108/01140011.bmp
