Hi there, I read this concerning Bump Knurls like the one you posted.

Bump type tools are not recommended, especially for small lathes, because they impose considerable tangential force on the spindle which could lead to excessive spindle bearing wear. The shaft of the bump-style tool can be clamped directly in the mini-lathe toolpost. The head of the tool can rotate up or down on the pin that attaches it to the shaft so that the wheels automatically center themselves on the workpiece. Again, though, I do not recommend this style of tool for use on the mini-lathe due to the high forces it imposes on the spindle bearings In the scissors-style tool the forces are imposed on the clamp arms rather than on the lathe spindle.

Thats why I made my El Cheapo clamp knurler and got rid of my bump one.

i look at this way i don't use it or need it enough to be concerned. most of the stuff i work with is soft. personaly if i was going to knurl steel or stainless i wouldn't use it.

oh thats my next project cheappo style for quick change.

I am creating my own QCTP but would like to make it fit standard tool holders.

Aaron, buy one AXA-sized quick change toolholder from Lathemaster for $16.95. He has the cheapest ones I have found. Now measure that one for your dimensions. I have one Aloris holder that I use, and my toolpost and most of my holders are Phase II. The one that fits the least well is the Aloris. It was also the most expensive and they supposedly invented the things--go figure. It is very tight and actually only fits one of the two "shoes" on the QCTP.
